  • Hughen Nourse (who attended Maritzburg College 1951-1954) writes ...

I am told that the Maritzburg College 1898 Archives list of students is incomplete because of damage to the lists. I can add two names that are apparently missing.

My father Hugh Gordon (Bonnie) Nourse and his brother Phillip Norman (Bob) Nourse were at College in 1898, and are pictured in the photo of the football team from that year.

When the school closed because of the Boer War, the students were sent home and the brothers joined the KOKSTAD TOWN GUARD. Once College re-opened, they returned to school, only to have Mr Clark tell them there were no vacancies. So they went on and completed their education at DHS. HG Nourse might have the unique distinction of having played first team football at both College and DHS.

Their father was a charter scholar in 1866 at Pietermartizburg Boys School. In 1951, when I was a third-former, Mr Chapman, the bursar, called me in one day to show me the list of students from that year - he had spotted my grandfather's name, H Nourse, on the list.
