Hello !*FIRST_NAME*!,

'GENEALOGY WORLD' - NEW ITEMS :

Google is easily accessed, but WorldCat's locations of 1.3 billion items in 10,000 libraries around the world previously have been available only through institutional access. It's become available to the public here and now. It's F*R*E*E and simple to use. Just type in a book name or author and it shows which library holds that book.

WEBSITE VISITORS WRITE:
Many charming postcards of the old days (of SA interest) are constantly being added to this section by by Glynis Millett-Clay.
One newsletter subscriber has commented as follows:
"I have had a look at Glynis's postcards - perhaps you should mention them specifically in a newsletter as people are always looking for pictures of the ships their ancestors travelled on and any one of these would be of great interest to the right individual. There are others of special value, and one is the prospector's cart, N Transvaal - any family historian with a mining ancestor would love that as an illustration for the family narrative, and not an easy thing to find such pictorial representations of the early mining industry. All in all a most worthwhile collection, in my opinion."

NATAL WITNESS:
28 Natal Witness - Domestic Announcements are now available. The most recent of these is dated 1947.

DOMESDAY BOOK NOW ONLINE
Over 900 pages from the Domesday Book, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085 as a survey of his realm, are now available online at the National Archives:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/domesday
In keeping with the role of Domesday in taxation there's a small charge for each page you download! However the colour scans are superb, and a translation is provided.
There are some interesting statistics in the 'World of Domesday' section of the site - for example, surprising to learn that in 1085 there were just 112 towns in England, and even London, the largest, had little more than 10,000 inhabitants. Major towns such as Norwich, York, and Lincoln, had populations of less than 5000 - less than live today in the village of Stansted Mountfitchet. It's amazing to think that in 1085 the entire manor of Stansted was worth just 11 pounds, even though it had woodland for 1000 pigs, 20 acres of meadow, 11 villeins, 1 priest, 3 slaves, 120 sheep, 24 goats, 2 horses and 5 asses!

Rosemary Dixon-Smith informs us:
There are some online changes for Killie Campbell Library - more correctly now called 'The Campbell Collections'.
The old Campbell Collections website at http://khozi2.nu.ac.za is still operating and will be available for some time However, a new web site http://campbell.ukzn.ac.za is under construction: it will give a link to the old web site.
A separate matter is that there is a new catalogue:
All UKZN Libraries and the Special Collections "go-live" on the new Integrated Library Management System, known as Unicorn, on 1 August 2006. This system completely replaces the Urica Library system - previously linked on the Main Page of the old Campbell Collections site. Urica will no longer be accessible.
Instead, go to http://libprod.ukzn.ac.za/uhtbin/webcat - this gives direct access to the new catalogue and there is no need to go via the Campbell Collections site (either new or old!) to access the catalogue.
Previous Library databases have been merged and the unified catalogue, known as "iLink", enables users to search for material at all UKZN Libraries and Special Collections. Users will be able to select whether to search holdings at all libraries, a specified group of Libraries or a single library, all from the same search screen.
To search the superb photograph collection at Campbell go to their own site - there is no change to the search facility for the photographs, it isn't affected by the new online catalogue.
iLink also acts as a portal to other resources beyond the catalogue. Further refinements and additions will be added overtime, and the content of the existing separate Library websites will be integrated into one interface over the next few months. Plans for 2007 include implementing a federated search engine for selected electronic resources.

Rosemary also informs us regarding SoG News:
Index to the Surname Document Collection published
The Surname Document Collection is arranged A-Z by surname and consists of: Original documents such as birth, marriage and death certificates, deeds, wills, marriage licences and settlements, apprenticeship indentures, letters etc., Manuscript and typescript transcripts of wills, parish register entries etc, family trees and other research notes.
This index lists all of the surnames that are included in the Surname Document Collection. Cross references to alternative spellings may have been included but these are not necessarily complete.
The Index is at http://www.sog.org.uk/library/surnames.shtml

Kind regards,

Delyse Brown
