Hello !*FIRST_NAME*!,

'GENEALOGY WORLD' - NEW ITEMS :
Index on right hand side of page.

TRANSCRIPTIONS AND GENERAL SHIPPING LISTS:
Ellen Stanton has transcribed: Barnabas Shaw - The Story of his Life and Missionary Labours in Southern Africa. I am sure this addition to Genealogy World will be enjoyed by many.

Ellen also does us proud this month with 81 Shipping lists transcribed from South Africa Magazine 1891-1923. Many interesting names and stories appear in the lists.

Amongst the names listed possibly you will find someone you have been seeking. Rosemary was thrilled to find one of her Gadsdens; I noticed well-known passenger, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, author of JOCK OF THE BUSHVELD. In one of his short stories this author mentioned Donald and Robert McKay - brothers of my great-grandmother.

Another valuable aid to finding Births, Marriages and Deaths is Domestic Announcements transcribed by Ellen from South Africa Magazine 1900-1920.

ROBIN'S LISTS:
Robin has now completed the massive Maritzburg College project .. 12,500 names of former scholars transcribed!

To add to the above Missionary theme, Missionaries in South Africa is a list of names compiled by Robin.

ANGLO-ZULU WAR:
Please note the new URL at the top of the Anglo-Zulu War page.
Two recently added articles appear in this section this month:
'Frustrations and Records' by Graham Mason
'Joseph Lumley' by David Moon

VALIANT HARVEST:
Jennifer Giles has sent Genealogy World interesting accounts of the Harrison and Bishop families at Avoca Estates in Natal.

WILGEFONTEIN (WILLOWFOUNTAIN) SETTLERS:
A valuable Demographics table has now been added to this section. It is interesting to note that while Pearse was not included in the newspaper list of settlers, the name is to be found in this table.

BOER PRISONERS OF WAR IN BERMUDA:
Pamela Willcocks has sent us another list (from the book by Colin H. Benbow) - this time of Prominent Personalities. Rosemary has kindly offered to do 'look-ups' for anyone interested in names in this book.

LEGACY:

New UK Publication

You will remember that I mentioned that LEGACY is a new book written by a direct descendent of one of the heroes of Rorke's Drift, Kris Wheatley. Referring to this book (which was due for publication during January 2006), I stated that the men covered in Volume 1 are Attwood; Bromwich; Deacon; French; Gallagher; Hayden; Mabin; Miller; Millne; Tongue; Windridge and Wood.

Kris has written: "I have just been reading the December issue of your newsletter and noticed that you have listed the men I had written about in the above mentioned book. Unfortunately due to a problem with space, Bromwich, Deacon and French were held over to go into the second volume.

I also understand from the publisher that he has sent a review copy to the Cape Times.

French, Deacon, and Bromwich (if in 2nd Volume) won't be the only subjects. I do the research and the write up's, and submit it to the publisher when he says there is enough. With Volume 1 there was too much for the space allowed and three men were held over, however if I submit Volume 2 and its just right on size then those three men will possibly be held over until vol 3. (I'm not sure how publisher will work it)."

GAUTENG INVITATION:
Nolene Lossau of Sandton, Johannesburg, writes:
"As a number of you are aware, Sue MCKAY, who has been a prolific transcriber of various Eastern Cape Newspapers, and her husband, Ron, will be visiting South Africa for the first time in March.

They will have only two days in Johannesburg before moving down to the Eastern Cape. As Sue would love to meet up with as many of her fellow genies as possible, I have suggested that I hold an "Open House" for her on Sunday, 12 March 2006, in Sandton so that she can meet the Gauteng Genies.

If you would like to meet up with Sue and/or other Gauteng Genies, please give me a shout on nolene@mweb.co.za and I will forward all the details to you.

Please don't be shy! Non Genie Spouses and partners are welcome as well - am sure that Ron will feel better if there are a few non genie folks around for him to chat to!"

BRICK WALL and MISSING PERSONS:
Don't forget to check these pages regularly as requests are continually being added.

Rosemary received a request some time ago for information on the SS Scot; if the enquirer (name unknown) happens to be reading this newsletter, please note there is a photo of a musical evening on board this ship on passage from Britain to SA in 1892 available in the Illustrated London News picture library www.ilnpictures.co.uk/ This site is well worth remembering when looking for suitable pictures for family history publications.

Kind regards,

Delyse Brown
