Hello !*FIRST_NAME*!,

'GENEALOGY WORLD' - NEW ITEMS :
Index on right hand side of page.

At present the newsletters will be uploaded on our web pages and not sent individually. This is due to difficulties arising from the power outages presently taking place in South Africa. Please note that the decision not to send the newsletter to individual subscribers is not connected with any e-mail addresses 'bouncing'.

Rosemary Dixon-Smith reminds us of years gone by:
With the current (no pun intended) load-shedding situation in SA, electricity, or the lack of it, is on everyone's mind. Perhaps this would be a good time to consider what life was like for our ancestors before the advent of electrical power.

Did you know that in 1882 Kimberley was the first city in Africa to have electric street lights? Or that municipal electricity was first introduced in Durban in 1897 and in Pietermaritzburg in 1898? These and other interesting historical facts can be accessed at
http://heritage.eskom.co.za/heritage/electricity_in_south_africa.htm

For those descended from the TROLLIPs and BARTLETTs and other families connected with Standerwick/Standerwig, you may be interested to know that you can buy the original house on the Wiltshire/Somerset border, though it might be a bit out of your price range!!

You can download a brochure complete with pictures, floor plans and map, as well as a bit of history at

The following website has asked Genealogy World to mention the change in their URL:
Familyrelatives
http://www.familyrelatives.com
Previously this was www.familyrelatives.org

A very large number of records have been added, and new features include:
Photo Gallery - allowing individuals to upload photos and share them if they so wish.
Classified section - allowing individuals to advertise products and services or items that they wish to sell.
Profile/Social Networking section - allows people who are researching the same names to get in touch as well share information about places, expertise on records, take photographs for others etc - Its very collaborative.
Add Comments to existing records - rather than just looking up a record of an ancestor - amateur and professional genealogists can add information about people, i.e. occupation, number of children, likes dislikes etc to give history more colour. This is unique and no one else has done this.
Email system within the website allowing members to get in touch with each other.
Announcement section - allows members to make an announcement - similar to newspapers, Marriages, Engagements, Birth, Death, Reunions, Dinners, Genealogy Fairs etc.
Add a Homepage - allows members to set-up their home page - about their ancestors, add photos etc.

BRICK WALL and MISSING PERSONS:
Please look at each of these Pages from time to time in case you are able to assist someone in their research!

Although all GENEALOGY WORLD information is easily accessible from the MAIN MENU - from time to time - we notice researchers being unaware of information we have available.

The Genealogy World Spotlight falls this month on the name index to Verulam Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Baptismal Register 1859-1872. The original register, miraculously found in an excellent state of preservation by family historian Eira Makepeace, is now held by The Campbell Collections, Durban. Many of the family as well as farm names mentioned in this valuable Register are reflected in another Genealogy World index - 'Valiant Harvest', the story of the Natal Sugar Industry by RF Osborn. So - if you have ancestors who lived in the sugar farming areas of Natal's north coast, check both indexes for possible references.
