Hello !*FIRST_NAME*!,

'GENEALOGY WORLD' - NEW ITEMS :
Index on right hand side of page.

THANK YOU!
A great many of you sent in your good wishes during the Festive Season, I would like to thank you for your kind thoughts and, in turn, wish you well for 2006.

FAMILY HISTORY CENTRE:
The Family History Centre in Durban re-opened on 11th January 2006.

What a wonderful experience it is to discover our roots! We all know the feeling when a new 'find' is made. How even more fulfilling this must be when a person has been adopted.

A friend in the UK wrote to me recently of the amazing experience of meeting her half-siblings in Canada for the first time - after a 30 year search to find her biological father bore fruit.

Durban has its own success story! Several of you noticed the story in the local Newspaper regarding Ted Glieve (Robin Alexander) finding his 3 half-siblings in the UK (offspring of his biological mother). Ted is one of the people we helped with his search for his roots at the Family History Centre during 2005.

ROBIN'S LISTS:
Robin has now included the fourth segment of former pupils of MARITZBURG COLLEGE (1946-1960). The names of my two brothers appear!

Seeking an elusive ancestor? You might find the name among those that Robin has listed in the Alice Baptist Church Members.

FAMILY TREE MAGAZINE:
Rosemary has her 2 Emigration articles ... "SAILING TO SOUTH AFRICA" appearing in the January and February 2006 issues of this UK Magazine.

The UPDATE section of the February magazine also includes recent additions to GENEALOGY WORLD.

DIARY OF A NATAL MOLE:
Mole is going underground for a while and must, with regret, stop producing the Diary. Interesting and useful snippets will, however, continue to be shared via the Genealogy World newsletter.

WEBSITE VISITORS WRITE:
We now have an interesting account of Victorian Journalist, Adam Patterson. The Newcastle referred to is in the UK, not SA!

ANGLO-ZULU WAR:
Three new items regarding the Early Volunteer Units are now appearing in this section.

NATAL PASSENGER LISTS:
You will remember Patricia Glyn's amazing walk (in the footsteps of her ancestors) from Durban to Victoria Falls. Anyone who would like to see the newspaper cutting showing the arrival of the 2 Messrs Glyn and Mr Osborne (who took part in the 1863 journey) can do so by clicking on the 1863 arrival of the "Norman" in the NATAL PASSENGER LISTS.

Her walk completed, Patricia is at present writing a book about her experiences. Earlier on she had given me a copy of part of the Diary written by Sir Richard Glyn. In turn, I was able to supply her with information regarding James Gifford, leader of the expedition. He was the brother of my great grandmother. I am fortunate enough to have 3 letters written by Alexander Gifford (father of James) in which, among other things, he mentions the 1863 Glyn expedition.

FAMILY CHRONICLES:
Anyone wishing to read the Gifford letters (referred to above) can do so by scrolling down the Main Menu on the Home Page and locating FAMILY CHRONICLES (under Free E-Books). They certainly were made of strong stuff in the old days. It would appear from the second letter that Alexander Gifford participated in the autopsy of his son, Samuel!

THE 1820 SETTLERS:

"Wiltshire Settlers on the Weymouth"
Eastern Province Herald

Dicks, Crouch, James, Usher etc. are some of the familiar names mentioned in "Wiltshire Settlers on the Weymouth" (names also shown in the images). Anyone whose 1820 Settlers originated in Wiltshire must make a point of reading this article written by Sue Mackay. I am particularly fortunate in that because Sue's ancestor, Phillip Hobbs, was in the James Party she often inadvertently in her own search, helps me find what I am seeking! My ancestor, Samuel James, was the leader of the James party.

Sue, who lives in England, intends visiting Settler Country in the Eastern Cape during March. In addition to the above article, she has updated the Eastern Province Herald to include extra 1854 information, and 1855. The EP Herald 1847-1850 plus 1856 is now also available. The names in these items range from Selby via Shuttleworth to Swart!

My mother, whose maiden name was Shuttleworth, had told me that it was rumoured in the family that Byrne Settler, Henry Shuttleworth, had worked as an Upholsterer in Port Elizabeth after rejecting his allocated land at Byrne. I was thrilled to discover confirmation of this when Sue sent her recent 1854 EP Herald update.

Not only that, I had an Affadavit signed by my great grandfather, Joseph Shuttleworth (son of Henry), stating that as far as he knew when he was born in 1854, this had taken place in Port Elizabeth. One advertisement that gave double confirmation of these details! Joseph Shuttleworth was later to marry the granddaughter of Samuel James (mentioned above).

How often our ancestors have crossed paths with the ancestors of people we now know! Apart from Sue Mackay's Hobbs ancestor knowing my James ancestor aboard the "Weymouth" in 1820; in 1863 aboard the "Norman" with the Glyn brothers was the Shuttleworth family (Byrne Settlers) returning to Natal after living in the E Cape. On arrival in Natal the Glyn expedition encountered James Gifford. Shuttleworth being my mother's family and Gifford being my father's family. Small world!

During 2006 we hope to add as much useful information to GENEALOGY WORLD as possible. Thank you to those who contribute so generously of their time and effort toward this end. It is much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Delyse Brown
