EVENT AT WAGON HILL, Ladysmith 31 March and 1 April 2007:
Needle match promised
The success of 5SAI at Wagon Hill will need to be defended hard at the 2007 event at the same venue as teams from The Royal Navy, British Army and SAPS and others compete for the perpetual trophy and the cash prizes.
To commemorate the centenary of the Brickwoods Field gun run at Portsmouth, England a team of dedicated Field Gunners from HMS Collingwood will come to Ladysmith for the event and test their strength on Wagon Hill and the 1898 gun. The Brickwoods Trophy is held on the flat parade ground and is now competed for by 18 British Service Teams who are allowed just 6 weeks to practice before the event which is in June each year. This first event with a magnificent silver trophy donated by Brickwoods Brewery was first run in 1907. The involvement of the Royal Navy with the Siege of Ladysmith and the South African War is mentioned at every gun run so this opportunity for the sailors of today to visit the Town is particularly poignant.
The Royal Highland Fusiliers competed in 2005 and remain the only team to draw the original gun with its wooden trail up the original Swartkop. They plan to come in alternate years in the future as a part of their adventure training and battlefield education between their active service involvements to Iraq and Afghanistan. This Scottish Battalion has been grouping their strongest and fittest men and training them in the misty hills outside Edinburgh where the rocks are comparable to KwaZulu-Natal and the variety of vehicles that they have pulled up the hills a worthy rehearsal for the forthcoming event.
5 SAI have several members of the South African Defence Force Weight Lifting Team in their squad so weight and power should not be in short supply, although the use of pulleys and tackle will be needed although this was queried by the winning team last year. Their deployment to Burundi should make them battle hardened competitors and ready to defend their title.
Newcomers to the Event will be the SAPS team from Ladysmith who have a practice schedule in place and will be keen to prove that fitness, strength and teamwork will be additional virtues in the Police Service.
The Natal Carbineers competed last year and have every intention to return to improve their performance and enjoy the challenges of teamwork and leadership that the Event instills.
The Natal Field Artillery competed in the inaugural event of 2003 and in 2004 and have included the training value in their programme for 2007. As Artillerymen in the SANDF(VF)they are well placed to put their equipment handling skills to the test.
The organisers will guarantee a cash prize of R2000 for each team completing the course on the Sunday 1st April with winners and placed teams sharing an additional cash purse. The practice day on the Saturday 31st will have a limit of 30mins pulling for all teams which will be interspersed with arena displays on Wagon Hill from 17th Lancers, Dundee Die-hards, Miniature Cannon Club,, Oranje Vrijstaat Artillerie Corps, Zulu dancing , the Ambulance Corps of 1900 and a Tug-of-War competition.
