NATAL NUGGETS:
Several postcards have been sent to us by Maureen Kruger. It is particularly interesting to see how much the Esplanade in Durban has changed!

WEBSITE VISITORS WRITE:
We now have a list of Death Notices Lynn Couperthwaite has available. Please contact Lynn if you find a name in her lists that interests you.

If anyone is interested in including lists of Death Notices in their own possession - information they would like to share with others, as Lynn has done - please contact me.

Many postcards of SA interest are being sent in by Glynis Millett-Clay. One of special charm is that entitled 'A broken axle 70 miles from anywhere'! Glynis tells me she has 110 postcards to send - this is a wonderful record of former days.

NATAL WITNESS:
More of the Natal Witness - Domestic Announcements are being added as they become available. Several deaths that took place at the time of the Siege of Ladysmith are reported in the NW Deaths 1901.

THE 1820 SETTLERS:

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
Are you looking for family members who died in Kenya in the 1920's. You may find some clues regarding the best way to search here!

MISSING PERSONS and BRICK WALL:
These 2 sections are constantly being added to - perhaps you are able to assist someone in their search.

Rosemary Dixon-Smith informs us that:
The National Archives is to move its Family Records Centre (FRC) staff and services to Kew from their current location at Myddelton Street, Islington, by the end of 2008.

Adrian Rowe thought you might like to know:
UK General Record Office
For those of you who have recently ordered BMD certificates from England and have wondered why there has been such a long wait, you may be interested to know that it is reported in the Family Tree Monthly magazine that earlier this year the GRO handled a record number of applications during a single month.

In January and February total orders reached 400,000 certificates a month. This unprecedented demand was mainly as a result of the BBC genealogy series "Who do you think you are?"!

WAS YOUR ANCESTOR ON THE WARATAH?

By Rosemary Dixon-Smith

Recently added to Genealogy World the background narrative plus the passenger and crew lists of the WARATAH, lost between Durban and Cape Town in July 1909. Names include all those lost on the fateful voyage, both passengers and crew, with details of ages and occupations for the passengers who embarked in Australia, plus their port of embarkation. The passengers who left the ship at Durban are given in a separate list. On the list of those who were on the final voyage are the names of passengers who joined the ship at Durban.

Note: the lists are NOT taken from previously published sources, but offer a competely 'new' look at the people involved in this great sea mystery.

Rosemary writes: "This might be of interest to some subscribers":
Anyone with Scottish ancestry?
Have a browse at http://www.workinglives.org.uk/
The Ayrshire Libraries Forum's Working Lives website pulls together images of industrial, commercial and agricultural heritage in the county, opening up a rich and varied past. The site contains more than 400 images selected from the collections of the three public library authorities, East Ayrshire Arts and Museums, the SAC (Scottish Agricultural College) at Auchincruive and Ayrshire Archives. Some images may evoke memories, some may serve as a source of enlightenment, and some may just leave the visitor with a sense of awe. Topics include fishing, agriculture, building and transport and each image is complete with captions. There is also background history to help the researcher. If you are able to contribute further information about any of the images, there is a 'Can you help?' form available in each image record. Although the site focuses specifically on Ayrshire, it has general relevance for all those whose Scottish ancestors worked as miners, in shipbuilding, in the dynamite factory or in many other occupations. I was entranced to find photographs of the women cartridge makers at Nobel's factory, wearing their hair in pigtails for safety! A fascinating glimpse of a hard world.

Kind regards,

Delyse Brown
