Hello !*FIRST_NAME*!,

'GENEALOGY WORLD' - NEW ITEMS :
Index on right hand side of page.

Welcome to all our new Genealogy World subscribers who attended the Durban Family History Fair on 9 June (see below report).

Among those present at the Fair was Jennifer Giles from Australia - it is good being able to picture our e-mail correspondents!

There were many familiar faces at the Fair. Our GENEALOGY WORLD stand was constantly busy - being able to show many newcomers the website at the click of a mouse! Rosemary Dixon-Smith's articles concerning SA Research were greatly in demand.

ANGLO-BOER WAR:
Rosemary Dixon-Smith does us proud photographing Intombi Memorials.
Have a look at this wonderful addition to the website. How marvellous to be able to see a photograph of a Tombstone (with inscription) of a fallen member of your family. Rosemary has supplied us with an excellent collection of historic records.

Rowena Wattrus continues to do a sterling job and sends us further

NATAL NUGGETS:
Gordon Haygarth (former Town Clerk/Chief Executive officer of Durban Municipality) writes concerning the families of MJ McKen, JM Wood and JW Haygarth and tells us of their connection with the Botanic Gardens, Medwood Gardens, and Haygarth Road in Kloof.

THE SCRIBE:
Rosemary Dixon-Smith keeps us amused - read the amusing Epitaphs she has added to The Scribe.

NMIP:
Adrian Rowe updates the Natal Marriages Index Project summary. Those transcribing the Natal Marriages are making an outstanding contribution to the preservation of records. However, Adrian would welcome anyone able to help with this transcription project!

1820 SETTLER CORRESPONDENCE:
The latest transcriptions to be added by Sue Mackay are:
CO48-54 National Archives, Kew, London - 1821 Government Despatches from the Cape
CO48-49 National Archives, Kew, London - 1820 Government Despatches from the Cape

Sue writes and informs us:
Thought you would like to know that I paid a quick visit to Kew.
While I was browsing on their computer my eye was caught by
'1820 settler correspondence - transcriptions of TNA CO48 series'
and when I clicked on it I was taken straight to the correspondence index page of genealogyworld.net!!
I had been thinking perhaps I should tell them about the project but they obviously know already!

BRICK WALL and MISSING PERSONS:
There is a sense of achievement when names are removed from these Lists! However, please aid those who are adding queries.

Report on FAMILY HISTORY FAIR:

Saturday, 9 June 2007

VENUE: Church of LDS, 144 Silverton Road, Musgrave, Durban

Jenny Harries who organised the above FAMILY HISTORY FAIR writes as follows:

We had an excellent Fair with about 250 people attending - very positive feedback.

Excellent talks were given by the following:
ISEBELLE KRAUSS of Genealogical Society of Utah (based in Jhb) on GSU and South African records
STACIE GIBSON - The role of the Campbell Collections in Genealogy (Killie Campbell Museum)
PUMLA DLAMINI - The Oral History and Outreach Programmes of Kwazulu-Natal Archives
ADRIAN ROWE - The Fields of Fields Hill
DAVE HONOUR - Tracing the Honour family back to 1522.

Three courses were well attended:
1) Beginners Course
2) Computerising your Family Tree
3) Using the Internet for Family History.

Popular were the DVD's shown:
"The Ghost in Your Genes"
"Who do You Think You Are" series
Oral History Power Point display.

Internet and Research Assistance was given in the Family History Centre. The FHC was extremely busy with lots of positive results, and lastly of course there were the stands who all reported good attendance by very interested public:
Bergtheil Museum, EasiPassports/Easi Documents, Family Crests, Genealogy World Website, GSSA/EGGSA, How to Publish a Fanily History, Ike's Books, Just Done Productions, Making Memories/Preserving Photos, Military History Society, Military Medals and History, Natal Marriage Indexing Project, Old Directories and Voters Roll, Organising a Family Re-union, Our African Ancestors, South African National Society/World Ship Society, Van Riebeeck Society, plus other displays on various subjects.

And the CHERRY ON THE TOP was the wonderful news that AC BRABY's has donated everything in an old storeroom to the FAMILY HISTORY COMMUNITY and Adrian Rowe was able to present to our Guest of Honour, Isebelle Krauss, a 1912 Edition of BRABY'S TRANSVAAL AND RHODESIA DIRECTORY, so that it can be filmed and digitised.
We have the 1913 Edition in the DURBAN FHC if anyone wants a look-up!! (Plus most of the DIRECTORIES FOR NATAL from 1945).

Kind regards,

Delyse Brown
