Hello !*FIRST_NAME*!,

A Newsletter reader informs us regarding Godalming in England, "which has recently celebrated the lighting not of its streets, but of about 30 houses in 1881.

Edward Friedrich Hermann Heinrich Lauckert was the Technical advisor for Siemens during the installation of the first public electricity supply in Godalming, Surrey.

The Siemens project engineer, Edward Lauckert, had a daughter Emma who died in South Africa in 1933, having married Cecil William Ogilvie, the son of Hollings Ogilvie.

The grandparents of our Newsletter reader ran a creamery in Natal called Twin Streams and she always wondered how they kept things cool. Her 92 year old mother said they used a generator which ran on paraffin. They bought in milk from surrounding farms and they must have had to go like smoke to get the stuff churned before it turned. Her grandmother was famous for her butter which she exhibited at the Natal Show. All managed without electricity from the grid.

Twin Streams Creamery used to send butter to England during the war. Imagine how they kept that fresh! Did they have freezer ships in those days?

As to the Godalming electricity - it was a bit of a non-starter and didn't last long because it was inefficient. They didn't get proper electricity for some years so clearly South Africa was streets ahead of England. Interesting that Siemens was involved at that early stage. Such a big name in Europe nowadays. Lauckert was involved with the laying of the Atlantic telegraph cable to America."

Those interested in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War will be interested to know that Kris Wheatley informs us that Volumes 1-5 are now available in her LEGACY series.

Kris first learned about Rorke's Drift after seeing a painting of the Battle in the house of her grandparents and later learnt that the possible artist was her great grandfather, Private Caleb Wood, one of the defenders.

With this fascinating inspiration she set about finding out more, and LEGACY is the result of painstaking, in depth research.

LEGACY Volumes 1 & 2 have been popular sellers since they were published.

Natal Marriage Index Project.

Adrian Rowe reports that the NMIP transcribers have completed the transcription of all marriages filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) from 1845 to 1899, which were on 35mm films. These films contained on average 750 marriage certificates. From 1900 the marriages are on 16mm films, which contain between 2500 and 2900 marriage certificates.

At the end of December 2007 the NMIP database contained 53,246 marriages from 1845 to 1923, but this number included duplicates of some marriages.

After months of negotiation with GSU, they agreed to digitize the Natal Marriage films and the DVDs were received on 19 December 2007 and Adrian started preparing for transcriptions to commence in January from the digital images. This has revolutionised the project as transcribers are now able to work from home. The number of transcribers has increased and Bridget Hunter from Johannesburg has recently joined the team.

Adrian is still looking for more transcribers and if you have a little spare time, a computer, software which can open digital images and MS Excel, and would like to volunteer your services, please contact him on 031-7644721 or at rowe@xsinet.co.za.

New Gelderland Settlers

2008 marks the 150 year anniversary of the founding of the Nederlandsche Landbouw-emigratie Maatschappij (Netherlands Agricultural and Immigration Company): its aim was to send settlers from the Netherlands to Natal.

From 26 March 1858 the barque Estafette lay at Oosterdok (Eastern Dock) Amsterdam, taking on board crew, passengers and cargo, before sailing for South Africa on 22 April 1858. Other ships followed, bringing settlers to New Gelderland on the Natal north coast between the Nonoti and Sinkwazi Rivers. Was your ancestor among these Dutch settlers?
