Cape Passenger Lists:
The passengers aboard the 'Pretoria Castle' who departed on 1 September 1961 from Cape Town to Madeira and Southampton are available.
Natal Passenger Lists:
Recently several of you have requested Passenger Lists for the 1870s, Rosemary Dixon-Smith now has the arrival in 1878 in Port Natal of the 'American' and the 'Roman'. There are also two new shipping items available for 1858 and two new shipping items available for the 1840s.
'Genealogy World' now has a list of the pioneers mentioned in 'The Pioneers of Vryheid, the Nieuwe Republiek', by Basil JT Leverton and John A Pringle, published by the Natal Museum in 1974: The book is not indexed so anyone requiring a f*r*e*e look-up from 'Robin's Lists' please send an e-mail. Note that some names appear with both Dutch and Afrikaans spelling, e.g. van Rooijen / van Rooyen. The period involved is mainly in the 1880s.
Mr PN Knox has kindly given his permission for information contained in
'THE ARTS IN SOUTH AFRICA - 1933-1934'
edited by WHK and Published and Printed by Knox Printing and Publishing Co Durban to appear on 'Genealogy World'. If you are interested in anyone listed in this publication, please send an e-mail for a f*r*e*e look-up.

World War 1 Records
For those who were rightly concerned about this issue, the cards have been saved. The Western Front Association has gained custodianship from the UK Government; according to the Society of Genealogists, an announcement has been posted on their website stating :
"WFA granted custodianship of the mens Medal Index Cards
Thursday, 12th May 2005, from Bruce Simpson
The Western Front Association is pleased to announce that following negotiations with the Lord Chancellor's Department, the National Archives, and the Ministry of Defence, we have been granted custodianship of the Great War Medal Index Cards.*
The Cards are now in the possession of the W.FA. and have been moved to a secure storage facility.
Due the current condition of the cards and the filing cabinets, our next step is to provide new storage cabinets, and under the direction of archivists manage the cleaning of the archive.
To secure the long term future for the cards we will need to raise funds for the administration and long term care of them. Once the funds have been raised we will endeavour to digitally copy the reverse side of the cards that hold correspondence details-approximately 5% of the cards. We will also be seeking a permanent home for this valuable archive.
This is an exciting project for the W.F.A. in our 25th Anniversary year; we would ask people to bear with us as we work to secure the future of these historical and important documents.
Bruce Simpson
Chairman, The Western Front Association
*The women's cards have been given to the Imperial War Museum."
That's all for now,
Kind regards,
Delyse Brown

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: "Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"
