The London Film Museum recently held the first exhibition commemorating the film 'Zulu', showing rare photos, storyboards and other interesting memorabilia from the film.
The exhibition included many rare items seen in public for the first time, including the original storyboards, script, unpublished photographs taken by the director on the set in Natal; Chief Cetewayo's shield and assegais used in the production, as well as other props, costume, production notes, posters from around the world, and the original shooting schedule.
The storyboards were discovered in Natal last year; a few miles from where the film was shot and illustrate the attack on the Hospital.
Dr Sheldon Hall, author of the definitive book on the making of the film, says "until recently it was thought that no original storyboards had survived from the production of Zulu, or even existed in the first place. The recent discovery in South Africa of an extremely rare set of storyboard sketches for one key sequence is a major find for anyone interested in the film."
Opening day events included a lecture by Dr Hall, a Q&A with the director's wife Maureen Endfield, and a free screening of the film. Present was Prince Valekhaya Shange of the Zulu Royal family and his aides. Prince Valekhaya Shange is a direct descendant of Prince Dabulamanzi, a Zulu Commander at the Battle of Rorke's Drift.

NATAL MARRIAGE INDEX PROJECT:
Adrian Rowe writes:
"I am very pleased to report that we have now reached 306,119 names on our Index. Many thanks to those team members (Adrian, Dawn and Matthys, Elaine, Lorna, Lyn, Robin and Sue) who have submitted packets during the last month. Without you, the NMIP would not move forward.
On 20 August 2009 I was informed by Isebelle Krauss of Genealogical Society of Utah, that "Phase one will be rolled out in 2010! To the General Public! ..... so your [team's] good work will definitely not be in vain". On 1 March 2010 Isabelle informed me "Your work will appear on the new.Familysearch, that is a fact, it will be free, that is a condition of all of our agreements with the custodians".
One of our transcribers sent me an extract of a posting on Eastern Cape Rootsweb site, in which Isebelle was looking for Indexers for Cape DRC records. She said that "all indexers get points as they do this work that entitles them to access even other digital images from our affilliate paying websites ....." Until I received this e-mail I was unaware of the above and after querying this with Isebelle she commented as follows: "I will enquire about the various transcribers for your project, at present the DRC Church is online, and Indexers are receiving points for their efforts, ranging from the most difficult getting more points to even the easiest ... The points are to be used on our affiliate commercial sites, in lieu of payment by the Indexers to access the material."
I have started a table keeping records of each transcribers productivity, so that I will know who deserves more than one pat on the back!!
Sadly since the project began many transcribers have fallen by the wayside for one reason or another, and it has been extremely difficult recruiting new transcribers owing to the restrictions placed on me by GSU. Thanks to Genealogy World, I do periodically receive offers of assistance from people from various parts of the World. Unfortunately because of the slowness of our Internet connections I am unable to send the packets of images by email and therefore have to rely on assistance from people within easy reach of Durban.
Three new transcribers have joined our team and I wish to welcome Lara Capell, Merryl Reardon and Barbara Scott, and look forward, in due course, to receiving transcriptions to add to the database."
If you would like to volunteer to assist in transcribing, and live in the greater Durban area, please contact Adrian on 031-7644721 or at roweam@telkomsa.net.
