FORTHCOMING HOLIDAY SEASON:
The Family History Centre in Durban will be closed from 16th December and will reopen on 11th January 2006.

As the Natal Mole will be taking a well deserved vacation during December, the last Diary of a Natal Mole for 2005 will be appearing on the GENEALOGY WORLD website at the end of November. Thanks to Rosemary Dixon-Smith for sharing her genealogical insights with us during the past year.

While on the subject of breaks, only one GENEALOGY WORLD Newsletter will be sent out during December, instead of the customary two.

NATAL NUGGETS:
There are two new items of interest added this month to this section: Deserters: Natal Government Gazette - September 1864

THE 1820 SETTLERS:
Thanks to her generosity we are very fortunate to have Tessa King's talk to the GSSA on the 1820 Settlers added to the website this month. Well researched and informative, this is a must read for anyone researching the 1820 Settlers.

NATAL MARRIAGES INDEX PROJECT:
A fair amount of preparatory work has been carried out and the indexing of our first film has been completed (1845 to 1852). Despite our relatively slow start we have now added another 10,969 marriages to our Index, thanks mainly to Ellen Stanton, in the USA, who has also given us her transcriptions from 1885 to 1899. Our digital Index now consists of 28,569 Natal Marriage records (57,138 names).

On 17 November 2005 project leader, Adrian Rowe met Melvin Thatcher of the Genealogical Society of Utah, who has undertaken to assist with obtaining official sanction for our project with Salt Lake City. The Index may in due course be used in the enormous project which has been recently announced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in which it is intended to digitalize Church and Civil records all over the World and index them.

If you are prepared to assist with this project and are able to spend a little time at the Family History Centre, please phone Adrian on 031-7644721 a/h.

ANGLO-BOER WAR:

Boer Prisoners of War in Bermuda

Pamela Willcocks has drawn our attention to a part of history possibly unknown to most in the present day. There were Boer Prisoners of War in Bermuda! Author, Colin H. Benbow, has kindly given GENEALOGY WORLD permission to use his book as our source of information. This book was published in 1962 by the Bermuda Historical Society , Par-la-Ville, Hamilton, Bermuda. Title: Prisoners of War in Bermuda.

You will notice when looking through the lists of names that the ages of prisoners range from 12 years of age to 71 years of age. One lad of 16 was shot while trying to escape.

That's all for now,

Kind regards,

Delyse Brown
