PUBLICATIONS PAGE:
Those with Eastern Cape interests might like to note the publication of the following book:

THE PIG AND WHISTLE
A History of a Settler Hotel in Words and Pictures

by Marion G. Moore

The Pig and Whistle Hotel is in Bathurst, E. Cape. It is 175 years old this year.

The book is 56 pages and has about 60 black and white photos and a centrefold of 8 colour photos. It traces the history of this historical hotel and its owners from its beginning in the 1820s until the present day. It was built by Thomas Hartley and later bought by Jeremiah Goldswain. It has some interesting anecdotes and legends.

NAAIRS:
Regarding the recent difficulty in accessing the NAAIRS website Clive Kirkwood writes:

"NAAIRS is maintained in an application that operates on a mainframe computer hosted by the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), the National Archives being a client of SITA’s.

Essential maintenance requires a dedicated system and SITA usually schedules this in advance in consultation with its clients for Sundays.

The National Archives tries where possible to advise NAAIRS users of downtime in advance by means of notices in the Notices section on its website.

Owing to particular web software updating work that needed to be done by SITA, it scheduled downtime commencing on Friday 21 September at 12:00, and the National Archives notified users by means of a prominent notice on its homepage.

It is possible that the duration of the downtime may have been different to the published notice, and I am aware that NAAIRS has been offline frequently since then. I have reported this to SITA on Friday and again this morning and I trust that the current problem will be addressed shortly. I regret the inconvenience that users have experienced through the unavailability of NAAIRS.

We do endeavour to ensure good public service delivery through NAAIRS, and except for scheduled down time over weekends, the system should be operative continuously and minor interruptions such as those currently experienced, should be able to be resolved quickly if reported to the National Archives or SITA."

BRICK WALL and MISSING PERSONS:
Please look at these Pages from time to time in case you are able to assist someone in their research!

FAMILYSEARCH INDEXING:
Some of you wrote in commenting that you would specifically like to help with the indexing of SA Records:

In response to this Jenny Harries has replied:

"Watch out on the www.familysearchindexing.org website
and as soon as any South African records become available - you can choose to work on those specific projects."

Penny Graham writes:
"The above is an excellent site. It mentions William Scanlan's 1820 Party from Longford Town. The site is not yet complete. They are still building it and welcome fully sourced Eire trees."

Appreciation from Veronica van Zyl in Canada:
"I can't thank you enough for passing on the address of Ione White when I asked if I might use the Obituary of Rev James Auld from the website. I am now corresponding with 5 Auld descendants, on 3 continents including South America, who have shared photographs and correspondence that has been most useful.

They also put me in contact with Stephanie at the Amathole Museum who also had been most helpful in finding material in their 'Missions File'. So one thing led to another and I am so grateful. So many treasures to examine as the picture gets clearer and clearer."
