THE 1820 SETTLERS:
Sue Mackay has sent us several interesting items packed full of information:
Grahamstown Journal 1851-53
Extracts from the Eastern Province Herald - 1854
Farmer's Chronicle August 1889 - 1892
Many familiar names such as Trollip, James, Nourse, Selby etc. appear. These transcriptions always bring to life the events of everyday life in the 1800s.
NATAL SCHOOLS:
'The Happy Ship', A History of Durban Girl's College, 1877-1977' Robin Griffiths has indexed this publication. Rosemary is mentioned.
So Robin has already had his first 'look-up' request close to home!
'For Hearth and Home, The Story of Maritzburg College 1863-1988'
Robin Griffiths is doing a magnificient job of transcribing the thousands of names of former pupils of MARITZBURG COLLEGE from the above publication for 'Genealogy World'.
Matthew Marwick, Archivist at Maritzburg College, has taken a great deal of interest in our Natal Schools project. As a result, I may be parting with a rugby honour's cap that belonged to my father - for Matthew to add to the Museum they have at Maritzburg College!
NATAL PASSENGER LISTS:
Those of you that take an interest in the Shuttleworth family (and therefore of the 1820 Settler James family) might be interested to know that as a result of the Jessie James article I wrote for 'FAMILY CHRONICLES' recently, Rosemary Dixon-Smith has managed to find the arrival on board the 'Randolph' of Thomas Thomas, guardian of Jessie James and her siblings. I have therefore now included reference to this from the article.
The 1861 arrival of the RANDOLPH can also be accessed from Natal Passenger Lists.
WEB SITE VISITORS WRITE:
Those of you descended from 1820 Settlers might like to read an article written by an Albany Sheep Farmer about his experiences in the old days. This was discovered by Rosemary. You might also like to see the list of previous Town Clerks at Queenstown which Becky Horne has sent us.
BRICK WALL:
Don't forget to have a look at this section regularly. One of the recent contributors could not get over how quickly he received a response to his 'Brick Wall' request for information .. within 48 hours! Another was able to remove her request as the family being sought had been found.
GSSA:
Nigel and Cynthia McFerran have included the latest two Newsletters in their GSSA section.
NATAL MARRIAGES:
Adrian Rowe, who has been working on a Natal Marriage project in an attempt to eventually have copies of all
the films available from Salt Lake City - kept in stock at the Durban Family History Centre - has just received a major resource from Ellen Stanton in the US. Ellen has transcribed about 23,000 marriages, between 1890 and 1923. She has very kindly sent us 17,600 of these records from 1900 to 1923 for use in our Centre. It is Adrian's intention to slowly transcribe the missing names. He has already received one volunteer to assist with this project. He would be very pleased to have more help. If you are prepared to assist (there will be no deadlines set!), Adrian will be very pleased to hear from you. You can contact him on 031-764-4721 (after hours).
EAST GRIQUALAND:
In the property agreement shown in Family Chronicles: 'Men of the Land', one of the witnesses is Nourse. In making contact regarding Maritzburg College, a member of the Nourse family mentioned that during the Anglo-Boer War some members of the Nourse family had been in the Kokstad Town Guard, as was my Shuttleworth grandfather. You can read about this by clicking on 'WEBSITE VIEWERS WRITE regarding East Griqualand'. Another witness of this particular document was James Cole - his name is to be found in the Natal 1933 Who's Who (Main Menu).
I recently received an e-mail request for information from someone in Australia. He stated that in 1982 I had written to the Librarian at Haddington in Scotland about my g grandfather, David Brown! One apparently leaves a paper trail!
I felt encouraged by this e-mail as it made me realise that all the hard work we do in our research does not have insignificance. Sometime, somewhere, it will benefit someone, perhaps even long after we are gone.
In the past - I often used to think - if only our family had written down a few details (no matter how brief) - how much I would have valued such information. In fact, this was what motivated me to be one of the ones that did write something down for future generations!
Even if not in your particular family tree, I would suggest anyone wishing to write (even a brief account) read:
'THE DAYS THAT COUNT' by Henry Dorning (Family Chronicles).
My grandfather once told me that East Griqualand had had a blizzard in days gone by. I had often wondered (as we all do, after the death of family members) just which year this had occurred. Henry answered my question!
FAMILY HISTORY FAIR
Heritage Day - 24 September 2005
The day has come and gone! A lot of hard work went into making the Fair a success. I could not believe the numbers that turned up to this event! Jenny Harries is to be congratulated.
I said to Jenny (whose dedication and hard work made it the success it was) .. "With such a success .. people will expect the Fair to be an annual event!" So it came as no surprise when the first e-mail I received after the Fair said it all ...
"Well done to all concerned! An annual event I hope? I was very impressed with the number of visitors that you had. I
managed to buy a book that I've been wanting for ages. I also found some people that I'm researching in one of the
Centre's library books so I was doubly pleased."
The Librarians at the Musgrave Library (now at Glenwood Centre, Moore Road, Durban) might K I L L me for mentioning this, but ... the book regarding Mitochondrial DNA ('THE SEVEN DAUGHTERS OF EVE' by Bryan Sykes) - referred to by Colin Jermy in his talk on DNA at the Fair - is available at the Musgrave Library. It is well worth reading. A useful URL also gleaned: http://stanfield.und.ac.za/genealogylinks.htm
That's all for now,
Kind regards,
Delyse Brown
