  • Was your ancestor a descendant of the Rev. John Brown of Haddington, Scotland? He was born in 1722.
  • Do you know the parents of David Brown who married Margaret McIntosh in Tibbermore, Perth, Scotland in 1810?
  • Are you able to help find the mother of Mary Ann Williams who lived in Rogerstone, Newport, Monmouthshire, England? She was the wife of John Rodway. She was probably born about 1815. Her father was John Williams.
  • Does anyone know the parentage of Philip Fisher who was born about 1804 at Usk, Monmouthshire, England? He was married to Jerusa Llewellyn whose parents (probably from Glamorganshire, Wales) were Onesimus and Ann Llewellyn. Philip and Jerusa married in 1825 and lived in Rogerstone.

  • I am researching the twenty soldiers who were killed in the First World War and whose names appear on the Port Alfred War Memorial. One of them is Bernard David Olyott - he was fostered by John and Alice Olyott. On his death notice Alice Olyott states that his real father was Patric O'Neil. I can find no information on the Olyott family (save that they came from Ireland) and would like to know when they came to SA, where they lived, who was Alice, what children John and Alice had, who was Patric O'Neil, why the Olyotts adopted Bernard and so on. The Olyotts lived in Port Alfred but I cannot find an estate file for either John or Alice. Bernard's is in the Cape Archives. Any suggestions? ... Kathie

Anyone researching the WOODWARD surname, please check your family trees for any sign of a link to the elusive brothers. • 2. My 2 x Great Grand-father was John GRAINGER b. 30 Jul 1826 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. John GRAINGER married Isabella BOWIE (b. 23 Jul 1824 and d. 14 Jul 1893 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland) on 22 Jan 1850 in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. John & Isabella had 7 children born in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland - John, 1849; Mary Davidina Brown (my Line [named after the Rev. • 3. My 2 x Great Grand-father was James Henry BUTTERWORTH b. 20 Oct 1810 (according to the 1841 Census in Wiltshire, England); d. 4 Jul 1841 in Melksham, Wiltshire, England. James Henry BUTTERWORTH married Ann SIDNELL (b. 1798 and d. 27 May 1893 in Melksham, Wiltshire, England). James and Ann only had the one child, Henry George BUTTERWORTH b. 1835 in Melksham. Henry George married Ann Ellen VINCENT (1835-1899) on 13 Jan 1858 in Melksham, Wiltshire, England. The BUTTERWORTH and SIDNELL families were at various times shown as non-conformist and James Henry BUTTERWORTH's will was witnessed by 2 Quakers and also administered by known Quakers so it is also possible that he was at some stage a Quaker (not that I have found any evidence of this to date). I cannot identify the parents of James Henry BUTTERWORTH but there were only a few BUTTERWORTH families in Wiltshire in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Does anyone know who the parents of James Henry BUTTERWORTH were? Does anyone have a connection to any BUTTERWORTH who was born, married or died in Wiltshire in the late 1700's and early 1800's?

I would love to hear from anyone who connects to the families (in the above three queries) in anyway or who can add any information about the families, has photos or any other information. Thanks. . . . Ian BUTTERWORTH

  • I am seeking the marriage of my Great Grandmother and father, and the birth of my grandmother, which all point to being in South Africa. My great Grandfather was a soldier in the Boer War. He had the unusual name of Louis Joseph Victor Ernest Ruelens, born 1870 in The Strand, Middlesex, London. My great grandmother Ellen Eliza Johncock(s) was born 1882, Plumstead, Kent. Ellen Eliza is on the 1901 UK census, still as unmarried with her maiden name. Louis is on the UK census until 1881, I can't find him from then on.

My Grandmother was born Edith Ellen Josephine Ruelens. Her death certificate age makes her birth about 1903. It is not registered in the UK. However in 1905, the second child of Louis and Ellen was born in Kent, England, as was their third child, in 1907. Louis died in 1908 age 37.

Ellen was engaged to one of Louis collegues, this man was killed and Louis began writing to Ellen to send personal effects etc. .. Ellen wrote back and suddenly uprooted herself from England and ended up marrying Louis. ... Anna Rowe

  • I am looking for my GGGrandfather's Father Jack John MOSS and his wife. The only information I have is word of mouth from my Nan and Grandad. Jack was a mounted Police sergeant and was killed when his horse reared. According to my Nan Jack's house burnt down but we are not sure where. As far as we know he had 4 children: George, John, Henry and Ginny/Jinny. George is my GGrandfather. He was born in 1893 in East London, South Africa. His religion was C of E. I have all his old war papers. After his father Jack died I think they all went to live with their brother John in East London, 30 Tennyson St. This is George's NOK on his war papers. Ginny/Jinny went on to marry a TREDOUX according to my Nan and lived in Johannesburg. This is where I'm stuck, I cannot get hold of any of the children's birth certificates to find out who their mother was. ... Paul Smith, UK

  • My grandmother Dorothy Kate HENDERSON was born in Port Elizabeth 5 Aug 1895. I am trying to find out more about her parents. Her father was George William HENDERSON born 1863 in Brigg, Lincolnshire, UK. Her mother was Julia Moore PARKINSON born 1866 in Poplar, Middlesex, UK. On the 1891 British Census George is single and living in Cheltenham and Julia is single living with her parents in Poplar. So it seems between 1891 and 1895 they married and moved to South Africa. I can't find any Marriage Certificate in the UK. Family stories say George was a silk merchant and Julia died when Dorothy was 3, so about 1898, but no Death Certificate found yet. George and Julia are said to have had a son who died in infancy. Dorothy was their only surviving child. In the 1901 British Census she is with her grandparents in Brigg and never returned to South Africa. George carried on travelling in South Africa as I have postcards he sent to Dorothy. These show he was still alive in 1909 but is thought to have died when Dorothy was still a child. I have not found a Death Certificate in the UK and so far have not traced any Death Notice in South Africa. Any advice welcome on how to progress with this research. ... Sam

  • The hospital records of my great great grandfather, Thomas HENLEY, show that he was "in the Cape" from 1824-1832. • My husband's grandfather WILLIAM MILNE LEE went to South Africa sometime between 1874-1884. He was a Tailor and made uniforms for the troops (presumably British troops taking part in the Zulu war). His wife-to-be travelled out sometime around 1881/2 and they married the day after her arrival in Feb 1882 in Mossel Bay. Their first child Mary Susan was born in Dec 1882. They eventually had to return to Britain (1883/4)due to the ill health of either the child or the mother (unsure which). Does anyone have any ideas of, (a) where to obtain passenger lists of ships travelling to South Africa around that time; and (b) civilian workers who supported the troops.

A relative, now deceased, had a gold medallion which was presented to William and inscribed : L.W.D. Club (the date is worn) won by William Milne Lee - then another inscription now worn and a name G.T. Addison. It has a South African gold mark. Unfortunately I have never seen this medallion, but wondered if anyone had a clue what the L.W.D. Club might have been. Regards ... Sandra Lee

  • I am researching my family history and have hit a brick wall as far as my great grandfather is concerned. As far as I know his name was Francis Boyles and apparently he was born in the U.K. in 1847 the Norfolk Broads have been mentioned but I have had no luck in finding any birth details. Apparently when he was 2 or 3 years old he went to South Africa with his family but the only record I can find in passenger lists is for a George Boiles, wife Lydia and children Mary, Robert, Francis and Sara on the ship Emily which sailed from London/Plymouth on 31 July 1850. I think this may be my Francis as the age would be about right. I have not been able to find anything else in South Africa as yet. I have been checking the passenger lists for departures from South Africa for Australia as Francis was married in Tasmania, Australia in 1875 , but as yet have had no luck. The only other information that I have is that Francis Boyles had won a silver cup for Rifle Shooting in Victoria County South Africa in 1864. If there is anybody at all that can help with any information I would really appreciate it. Thank you. ... Pat Moody (nee Boyles)

  • I'm trying to trace the movements of my great grandparents William Henry (real second name Robert) and Ellen/Nellie WALLER. They were in England in 1881, but by 1883 my grandmother Kate Laura was born in South Africa (not sure where). Her brother William was born in 1885, but by 1889 Ellen and the children are back in England where Ellen remarries, calling herself a widow. Any references to Williams death I found in NAAIRS were not him.
Ellen disappears from England in 1903/4 ... did she return to South Africa? Her daughter Kate leaves her family in England in 1918 ... did she too return to South Africa. She would have been Kate Laura Nicholson by then.
Please get in touch if anything about this story seems vaguely familiar to you! Thank you. ... Linda Martin, Ontario, Canada

He was the son of Henry George FRYER (1832 to 1905) who was a mariner and worked for the P & O Company, spending part of his professional life in China. The family story indicates that Henry travelled to South Africa as part of the gold rush, but there is no record of him having been back in England. I now wonder if he stayed in South Africa and made a new life there. Any information would be most welcome. Thanks ... Paul Fryer
