M A R I T Z B U R G C O L L E G E NOTABLE OCs It should come as no surprise that Maritzburg College, as a leading Natal school with a long and distinguished history, has produced an enviable number of Old Boys who have distinguished themselves in almost every field of human endeavour. Amonst its most illustrious former scholars it can count 10 senators, 4 generals, an admiral, a Commissioner of Police, 7 Officers Commanding of the Natal Carbineers alone, South Africa's pre-eminent English author, 2 Chancellors of the University of Natal, 3 Directors of Education, an Anglican bishop, a Chief Justice, 9 judges, and 3 Attorneys-General. But it is the prowess of its numerous sporting teams that perhaps gives the school and its former scholars the greatest pride, and its tally of over 170 international sportsmen to date is believed to be the most produced by a South African school. Indeed, the successes of especially its respective rugby, cricket and hockey teams against international opposition over the last decade have confirmed what many boys and Old Collegians have suspected all along ... that Maritzburg College can justifiably regard itself to be one of the great sporting nurseries of the world.
