THE SEARCH FOR THE “WARATAH”

EXPERIENCES OF THE “SABINE”

After a voyage of 14,700 miles in a fruitless search for the missing Waratah the Sabine returned to Cape Town, where Captain Owen related the story of the search, a brief cabled account of which has already appeared in our columns. Only four vessels were sighted and a piece of wreckage about eight feet by six inches broad and six inches deep, which appeared to have been in the water a considerable time. At Possession Island, 7163 miles from Cape Town, the searchers examined American Bay and Ship Cove, but found nobody there nor any signs of recent habitation. At St. Paul’s Island, 3315 miles from the Crozets, an examination was made, but no one was found there. There were several fishermen’s boats. Questioned with regard to the cable received in connection with the Ionic and her reported signals, Captain Owen said they never even saw the Ionic. In the neighbourhood of the Crozet Islands heavy weather was experienced, and the ship had a rough time. A look out was kept day and night, and the searchlight was kept going at night for five in every fifteen minutes.

Ellen Stanton
