Miscellaneous articles on the same page:

The easy steaming into the port of Durban of the Union Company’s steamer Athenian created much interest as an event marking the great improvement of the port. A good many people watched her come in, and were struck with the ease with which the entry was effected. In response to an informal invitation, a number of local gentlemen took luncheon on board the liner, Captain Martin presiding, and Mr. Alston, the local Agent, occupying the vice-chair. The Mayor (Mr. George Payne), in proposing the skipper’s health, said it was not perhaps too much to hope, judging from experience, that even the Norman would some day be brought into the Bay of Natal.

An outbreak of rinderpest is reported near Krugersdorp.

At the annual meeting of the Witwatersrand Old Hebrew Congregation, held in Johannesburg last month, the report submitted showed that the congregation was in a most prosperous position. The receipts for the year showed the large increase of £1497 over those of the previous year. During the year the rebuilding of the Synagogue had been completed. According to the balance-sheet, the surplus of assets over liabilities amounted to £4858 1s. 3d. The present value, however, of the stands and buildings is about £17,000, so that the actual surplus amounts to about £15,000.

In view of the question of the Sunday working of batteries on the Rand having been raised, the Krugersdorp Mining Inspector, thinking no doubt that the matter had been settled, recently issued a circular to the various mine managers in his district, notifying them that all batteries must in future be closed on Sundays. Some consternation was caused by this mandate, and Mr. Schmitz Dumont, the State Engineer, was informed of the course of action which his subordinate had adopted. He at once issued a letter to the mine inspectors, referring them to Section 15 of Law 12 of this year, dealing with the question of Sunday labour. Mr. Dumont, in the course of the letter, stated that he did not think it desirable for the mine inspectors to take new steps in the matter, on account of certain questions which were not yet decided.
