FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE “TROJAN”
Mr. Ryan, 2nd officer of the Trojan, met with his death on the evening of October 9 in a very tragic manner. It appears that when coming up from the hold he lost his balance, and on catching hold of a sling to steady himself it suddenly slackened and he was precipitated into the hold together with two large cases which were then being shipped, one of which fell upon his head, fracturing one side of the skull. In the opinion of the doctor, death was instantaneous. The funeral took place in Hamburg, and was attended by Captain Moseley, of the Trojan, the deceased’s brother officers, engineers, and the seamen of his watch. Mr. Ryan was a promising young officer, and his untimely and early death is much regretted.
According to the Klein Letaba correspondent of the Zoupansberg Review, a farmer named Bester recently shot three lions for an expenditure of six shots.
A French Company has purchased a site at Lourenco Marques for £30,000, for the erection of a first-class hotel. Another stand was sold there recently for £10,000.
The revenue of the Transvaal for August amounted to £513,257, and the expenditure to £400,583. The balance in the Treasury at the end of the month stood at £1,213,729.
The August returns from the Netherlands Railway (including the receipts from the Springs Colliery) amounted to £272,150, as compared with £272,150 for July, and £252,323 for June.
Last month at Krugersdorp Dr. Max Mehliss was married to Miss Barrett, a daughter of the well-known house of the Barretts of Luipaard’s Vlei. A reception was held at Luipaard’s Vlei, the residence of the bride’s father. Archdeacon Temple performed the ceremony.
The Natal Mercury learns that a secret Anti-Indian Society is being formed in South Africa, having been called into existence by the work of the Natal Indian Congress and other agencies. Branches are being formed in all Colonies and States with the head centre in the Cape Colony.
There are some ingenious young men in the Transvaal Civil Service, but they have been totally eclipsed by the latest “Daniel come to judgment,” who in all seriousness made the suggestion lately that when the thermometer reaches blood heat, the various offices should be closed for the day! He said they did that in Egypt.
Mr. Percy H. Jones, sub-accountant of the National Bank at Johannesburg, was lately the recipient of a handsome present from the officials of the bank on the occasion of his marriage with Miss Amine D. Brown, daughter of the late W. T. Brown, of Aberdeen, Cape Colony. Mr. Law, the Manager, in a few well-chosen remarks, made the presentation, and Mr. Jones suitably replied.

Ellen Stanton
