A FAVOURITE HOLIDAY TRIP.
With the finer weather coming on, many people will again welcome the comfortable circumstances under which a short cruise may be made to Madeira or the Canary Islands by means of the steamers of the Union-Castle Line. The voyage to Madeira occupies about three and a half days and that to the Canaries about five and a half days. The Royal Mail steamers of the line, which leave Southampton for the Cape every Saturday, call at Madeira, and on the homeward voyage they touch at the island every week, proceeding to Southampton to disembark. The Union-Castle intermediate steamers, which leave London every Friday and Southampton every Saturday, call at Las Palmas and Teneriffe alternately both on the outward and homeward voyages. Full particulars as to times of sailing and other information can be obtained from Messrs. Donald Currie and Co., Managers, 3 and 4, Fenchurch Street. E.C.
THE MISSING “WARATAH”
A Board of Trade inquiry into the disappearance of the steamship Waratah has been ordered, but it is improbable that it will be held for some time. The delay, it is understood, is caused by the wish of the Board to make the investigation as exhaustive as possible, and, further, by the fact that a considerable amount of evidence has yet to be obtained from Australia and South Africa. Lieutenant Seymour, R.N., and a party, with a searchlight apparatus, have been ordered to proceed from Simon’s Town to Durban, and join the s.s. Wakefield there to take part in the further search for the missing vessel, which, as already recorded in the columns of South Africa, has been decided upon.
Messrs. Lund and Co., the London agents of the Blue Anchor Line, owners of the Waratah, announce that the arrangements which have been made are for a further search for any of the survivors of that boat who may have reached the isolated islands in the Southern Indian Ocean, which are entirely outside the track of mail steamers. These islands include Prince Edward and Marian Islands, the Crozets and Kerguelen, St. Paul and Amsterdam Islands, and the search vessel will then take a zigzag course to Australia. The steamer Wakefield, which will make the cruise, is of 4072 tons, owned by Harris and Dixon, Limited, and the cost of the expedition is being met by the Commonwealth Government of Australia and friends of missing passengers of the Waratah.
