The death is announced as having occurred at sea, off the Canary Islands, of Mr. D. C. F. Moodie, a well-known South African litterateur. He was bluff, hearty, and genial, and most unlike a poet imaginable. Yet he had a considerable measure of the poet’s sensibility, and he positively reveled in verse composition. Many of the lyrics in “Southern Songs: are admirable, and in his “History of British Battles in South Africa” he has done a signal piece of service for the future historian of the continent. In this work he has strung together a mass of valuable records, which are connected by some excellent passages of descriptive writing. The fight at Amajuba, and the splendid heroism of Dingaan’s Day, are as faithfully recorded and as free from prejudice as the English triumphs in Zululand, Kafirland, and Basutoland. He was a man of splendid physique, and his energy was such that he contemplated a journey through undiscovered routes from Cape Town to Cairo. His great pride was that on a certain occasion when the Queen was being celebrated in Australia, he struck to the ground a vulgar ruffian who insulted the name of Her Majesty. He did some free-lance journalism in Australia, and ran a publication at Cape Town, called the Rambler for a few months.
Regards,
Ellen Stanton
