NATIVE ASSAULTS

Owing to the epidemic of assaults by natives on white women in the Estcourt district, and the leniency of the sentences imposed by the magistrate on the offenders, a well-attended indignation meeting was held at Mooi River on the 27th ult. at which the members of Parliament for the division were present. Although the law provides for two years and lashes, recent sentences have never exceeded six months. More than one speaker suggested the necessity of resorting to Lynch law. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Prime Minister to secure amendment of the law, practically abolishing the magistrate’s discretion in such cases.

A MASONIC APPOINTMENT

The Supreme Government of the Netherlands Constitution of Freemasons have appointed Mr. C. Christian Silberbauer, junior member for Tembuland in the Cape House of Assembly, Deputy Grand Master for the Provincial Grand Lodge of South Africa. His immediate predecessor was Professor Lewis, of the South African University. Right Worshipful Brother Silberbauer has held high Masonic office for years past in connection with both the English and Netherlands institutions, and is well known in the circles of the craft for his great interest in the charitable and educational schemes identified with the Order.

For receiving an African war medal in pledge a Wandsworth pawnbroker was fined 40s. and costs at the South-Western Police Court on Wednesday.

It is announced that military manoeuvres are to be held in the Frankfort, Heilbron, Kroonstad, and Vredefort districts from August 30 to the end of October.

Death due to delirium tremens and pneumonia was the verdict which a Coroner’s jury returned on Tuesday in the case of a man named William Bessell, who served with the gallant 24th Regiment during the Zulu War, and was one of the few who escaped from Rorke’s Drife.

Considerable excitement was caused in Klerksdorp recently by the arrest of two members of the local Repatriation Depot—vix., Lindsay Campbell, acting-superintendent, and Arthur Walter Busch, accountant, on a charge of stealing 100 bags of mealies and 100 bags of sugar in August last. Alfred Josiah Crossley, late assistant-superintendent, was also arrested, charged with the theft of six mules, 50 bags of mealies, and a light spring wagon. The accused were remanded.

Troopers Keogh and Boston both of the 8th Hussars, were skylarking in the barrack-room at Pretoria, when Keogh, who was lying on the bed at the time, took up a revolver, and pointing it in fun, pulled the trigger, shooting his friend through the stomach. All present agreed that they had no idea the weapon could have been loaded, as all ammunition had been taken away. Upon examination, one solitary cartridge was found in the revolver. Keogh, who was arrested, was liberated on finding bail of £50.

LOST FROM THE “SCOT”

Mr. Ivor F. Thomas returned to Burghersdorp on Sunday afternoon (says the Albert Times of June 19) from his flying visit to the Old Country. Unfortunately, his return journey was clouded by an incident as mysterious as it is sad. Mr. Thomas’s brother, Mr. Fred Thomas, was accompanying him to Africa for a trip, both sailing by the Scot on May 23. The weather was ifne, and the brothers spent some time together among the second-class passengers, and then, after a short stay in the first-class smoking-room, resolved to turn in. Their berths were in different cabins, and the brothers bade each other good-night about eleven o’clock, the ship at that time being in the open Channel, approaching the French coast. A lady, who occupied a cabin close by, heard the brothers say good-night. At seven o’clock next morning the steward entered Mr. Ivor Thomas’s cabin, and informed him that his brother’s berth had not been slept in, and that he had not been seen about the ship. After a vain attempt to find the missing gentleman, Mr. Ivor Thomas approached the captain, who at once had the ship searched, without result; and no trace was ever found of the unfortunate man. Mr. Fred Thomas, who was 31 years of age, was a married man with one child, and was in easy circumstances, precluding all ideas of possible suicide; and though his disappearance must largely remain a mystery, it can only be accounted for by supposing him to have got overboard accidentally. Though the weather was fine, the ship was rolling a good deal, and Mr. Fred Thomas was unaccustomed to the sea. In the opinion of the captain, what probably happened was that Mr. Fred Thomas, becoming sea-sick, went upon deck, and that while leaning over the side, a sudden lurch of the ship sent him overboard. Inquiries made at Madeira and cables dispatched thence proved, as might have been anticipated, quite fruitless.

Ellen Stanton
