WRECK OF THE “UMONA”

Further particulars are to hand of the wreck of the Umona, which left Calcutta for Natal on May 6 with a cargo of coolies and a few European passengers, and was wrecked in the Maldivian Archipelago on May 15. It seems that the vessel had drifted some 70 miles out of her course, and struck on a reef near Mamula Island. On the following day all the passengers were landed on the island, and as Colombo was only 480 miles distant, it was decided to send a boat there for aid. Volunteers were called for, but only two Lascars would go, the others being extremely frightened and inclined to become mutinous. Eventually, Mr. Ian Corvin, who was proceeding from Calcutta to Cape Town to undertake the Assistant Editorship of the Cape Times, Mr. Simkins (chief officer), Mr. Bruckland (third officer), and Mr. Bollemarche, made up a crew with the two Lascars, and, after an eventful voyage, during which they encountered very rough weather and suffered much privation, they reached Colombo. Here they were treated well by the officers of the second-class cruiser Pique, which boat later went to the assistance of the Umona, in company with the Arma, and safely brought away all the passengers, who had spent 15 days on the island, to Colombo. Among the European passengers, in addition to Mr. Corvin, were Mr. Siedle (brother of Mr. O. Siedle, of Durban), Miss Siedle, and Mr. Reenen, at one time a Boer prisoner, who was wounded at Paardeberg.

Ellen Stanton
