HOME BY THE “KILDONAN”

(By Our Travellling Representative.)

My third voyage in succession by the Kildonan Castle increases my opinion that this boat is not only the steadiest, but one of the best ordered in the fleet. It is always a matter of comment among the passengers, who are critical judges, that the food is both good and varied, many compliments being paid Mr. Jones, the Chief Steward. The voyage itself was made in cool and calm weather—no big horses on the sea and no “fiddling” in the saloon. Among the passengers were: Lord Charles Seymour and the Hon. Hugh Wyndham, aides-de-camp to Lord Milner; the former, who returns to the Cape in November with his chief, was a persona grata with all, entering into the fun of the ship and making himself agreeable to high and low; Mr. Henry Adler, who visits England to see his sons at college, and returns directly; Baron D’Inhaca, the holder of much property in Delagoa Bay; Mr. R. T. Coryndon, Administrator of Barotseland, on a four months’ holiday; Mr. D. Isaacs, of D. Isaacs and Co., Cape Town for a prolonged rest; Mr. Alfred Sutton, of Dunn, Sutton and Co., Ltd., Manchester, returning home after a first trip, resulting in promising business; and Mr. Jesse Hawes, Managing Director of Frederick Sage and Co., Ltd., who has visited all the principal towns and has done huge business. Messrs. Sage are erecting a large factory in Cape Town, furnished with modern machinery, which will be finished in March. Also, Captain Musgrave, of John Musgrave and Sons, Bolton; Mr. Boy, of Ecksteins, on a four months’ holiday; Mr. Ernest Josephi, representing a highly diamondiferous property in the Rhenosterfontein district of the Transvaal; Mr. N. Raphael, representing the Cabana Cigar Co., who returns in a few months with additional agencies; Mr. H. C. Hull, Kruger’s bete noir, who returns in October; Mr. James Butler, of Geo. Pauling and Sons, a Kimberley pioneer; Mr. Alphonse and Mr. Dick Lilienfeld of the Coronation Syndicate; Mr. E. Payne, of the Kuil’s River Tin Mines Syndicate, who brings most promising ore with him, and who returns to Cape Town almost immediately; Mr. A. B. Chauncey, the well-known sportsman’ Mr. E. Digby (John Grenfell); Mr. Homan, of Colesberg; Mr. Jasper Ries, of the well-known East London family; and Mr. and Mrs. Athol, the latter, better known as Miss Kate Seymour, having terminated a South African tour of 40 weeks, delighting playgoers with some of her Gaiety triumphs.

STOWAWAYS ON A CAPE LINER

At Southampton Borough Police Court, on Monday, Jack Smith, Brick Lane, Spitalfields, London, tailor; Jack Newman, Tunbridge Street, London, talor; Joseph Auzervacth, painter, of no fixed abode; and David Hankberg, soapmaker, of no fixed abode, were charged with being found on board the s.s. Braemar Castle, with intent to obtain a passage thereon without the consent of the owners or master. Mr. E. R. Enser prosecuted on behalf of the Union-Castle Company, and said the proceedings were taken under a different section of the Act to that under which such cases were usually brought. In this instance the men were found on board the vessel after she left Southampton. The Braemar Castle was a registered emigrant ship, and very stringent regulations were made for the protection of emigrants and the regulation of emigrant ships. The Braemar Castle was cleared on Saturday afternoon, and proceeded to sea. About a quarter to six Mr. Nichols, the pilot, was outside the Needles waiting for incoming vessels, and he discovered the Braemar Castle returning and signaling for a pilot. He went on board, and the captain handed the four prisoners over to him, with instructions to take them to Southampton and give them into custody. The prisoners Smith and Newman said they never intended to sail in the vessel, but while they were down below talking to their friends the vessel sailed. They did not hear the bell ring. The other two prisoners made no defence. The Bench found the case proved, and inflicted a fine of 40s., and costs each, or in default a month’s hard labour.

Ellen Stanton
