PORT ELIZABETH’s OCCULTING LIGHT
It having been found very difficult to distinguish the Hill Lighthouse light at Port Elizabeth, the Cape Government has decided on an alteration. The present fixed light is to be changed for a fourth-order occulting light. This apparatus will not revolve, but will be occulted by means of a screen to cut of the light automatically. The character of the new light will be one occultation of two seconds every 10 seconds. The light will be produced by a new process of incandescent petroleum vapour, the adoption of which for lighthouse purposes is quite recent. This installation will be the first of its kind in the lighthouses of the Colony, and the apparatus and machinery will be installed under the direction of Mr. Cooper, of the Public Works Department.
THE DURBAN FLOATING DOCK
DEPARTURE FOR NATAL
The voyage of the large new floating pontoon dock, which left the Tyne on Wednesday morning, where it has been constructed by Messrs. Swann and Hunter, will be watched with the keenest interest by all concerned, not excepting the underwriters, as the vessel is insured with Lloyd’s and the marine insurance Companies for £110,000. This dock, which is one of the largest yet built, has been ordered by the Natal Government, and, as our readers are aware, is destined for the harbour of Durban, where it is badly needed. In connection therewith the same builders have constructed a floating workshop, fitted with self-propelling machinery, electric light, and most modern appliances for dock work. For the purpose of the voyage out the workshop is secuired on the deck of the floating dock, and is included in the insurance.
It will be remembered that about this time last year a similar dock, though of small dimensions, was dispatched for Durban, but was unfortunately wrecked in November, at Mossel Bay. This dock, which was fully covered by insurance, cost the underwriters £70,000. The new dock, which is intended to replace the one wrecked, is being towed out by Smit’s powerful tugs, instead of by one steamer, as in the last case, which obviously makes it a better risk for underwriters, they receiving a similar premium to that paid in the previous case. Every possible precaution is being taken to avoid disaster in transit, and it is to be hoped that the new venture will be more successful than the last.
The tugs which will go to South Africa with the dock are the Zwarte Zee (542 tons) and the Oceaan (388 tons). A third tug, the Lauwer Zee, will accompany the dock as far as the Land’s End. The capacity for bunker coal of the towing tugs is about 550 tons in the case of the larger one and about 300 tons for the smaller one. Under ordinary steaming conditions the radius of action for towing given by this coal capacity would be from 1700 to 2000 miles. It is intended to call at Portland and refill the bunkers, and the dock itself will take in nearly 2000 tons of coal for the use of the tugs. If the weather is favourable and coaling operations between the dock and the tugs can be conducted successfully at sea, the coal carried will give the tugs a range of about 6000 miles. Should it be found necessary to go to port for coal, the suitable places after Portland are the Canary Islands, Freetown or St. Thomas, S. Paul de Loando, and Cape Town.
EATEN BY SHARKS
The Aberdeen Line steamer Damascus, which arrived at Plymouth on Wednesday from Australia and the Cape, reported that two days before reaching Durban, one of the crew, belonging to London, was swept overboard by a large wave. He was presumed to have been devoured by sharks, as he was not seen again, although the vicinity was searched for three hours.

Ellen Stanton
