A CAPE TOWN STOWAWAY
Bertram Gilbert, who described himself as a clerk, was charged, at Southampton Police Court on Saturday, with being found on the Union liner Saxon with the object of obtaining a passage without the consent of the owners. Mr. Ensor, solicitor, who prosecuted for the Company, said prisoner was discovered when the ship was two days out from Cape Town. He then stated that he had a ticket, but had left it in his berth. When a search was unsuccessful, he said one of the stewards must have stolen it, and he also said he had lost a sum of money amounting to £7 10s. Naturally, a charge of this serious nature on a mail steamer gave rise to considerable excitement, but after a thorough search, prisoner admitted that he had told lies. Mr. Ensor pointed out that, under the circumstances connected with the Cape passenger traffic, it was necessary that the practices of such men as the prisoner should be put a stop to. This was a case in which an example should be made, for the prisoner went on board without a ticket and then accused a steward of theft. He had, of course, to be kept on board for nearly three weeks. Prisoner said he was starving at the Cape, and he had to get to England to save his life. He had made the excuse about the money in order to save time, and had worked his passage the whole way. There was another stowaway on board, but he had managed to get away at Madeira. Mr. Ensor said it was known there was another man on board, but the strictest search for him had been unsuccessful. The Magistrate fined defendant £10 or two months’ imprisonment, and, as he was practically destitute, he had to accept the alternative punishment.
