His wife Mildred was born Mildred Quarman 1881 in Bombay, India and lived in Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire until emigrating to South Africa with her husband.   • I have been building up a HATLEY family tree (Hatley Family of Southern Africa) for sometime years now. Essentially the "Patriarch" of the family arrived in Natal in the mid to late 1850's. I have been unable to locate exactly when and where. Frederick Nixon HATLEY (born London, 10/03/1840) then sponsored the immigration of his brother Joseph Henry HATLEY to the Colony. Joseph Henry HATLEY arrived in the Colony aboard the SS Basuto in May 1875, with his wife Elizabeth Alice and two daughters. He had a large family, about 13 children in total, with the family name continuing through the one surviving son. I have a couple of missing facts that need resolution. These are:

They were all miners from Cumbria who went out to South Africa around 1900-1920 to work in the mines around Johannesburg. The brothers are Charles and Thomas Cook, both of whom were born in the 1890's. Their father was Charles Cook born in 1872 in Cumberland who was married to Sarah Jane.
