  • FOOTING WITH SIR RICHARD'S GHOST by Patricia Glyn

In 1863, English gentlemen Sir Richard George Glyn and his brother Robert came to Africa, lured to the continent by its big game and the astounding cascade that David Livingstone had recently 'discovered' and named The Victoria Falls. The brothers set off from Durban and, despite terrible trials, reached the Falls four and a half months later, becoming the fourth foreign party to do so. The men came close to dying of thirst, they got lost in the cruel Kalahari, they faced mutiny and abandonment by their staff, and they had close encounters with some of Africa's most dangerous animals.

Richard kept a diary about their extraordinary odyssey, a journal which inspired his and Robert's great-great-grand niece, Patricia Glyn, to shadow their expedition in 2005. But unlike her ancestors, Patricia did the journey entirely on foot. Accompanied by her little African dog, Tapiwa, this remarkable woman walked nearly 2 200 kilometres, following her forebears' route along the 19th-century wagon trails that once snaked along the great rivers of the sub-continent. Trudging through deep desert sand, battling through thick thornveld and walking unarmed in Big Five territory, she met Africa's gracious rural people, consorted with Zimbabwe's notorious 'war veterans' and sought out the descendants of the people who had helped Richard and Robert through their most trying times. Keeping strictly to the timetable set by Richard, she moved when his wagons moved, and stopped when they did - reaching the Falls on exactly the same day as her ancestors had, 142 years before her.

This is the story of two brave adventures told through two illuminating, interwoven diaries.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Patricia Glyn is a well-known South African broadcaster, having worked in radio and television for 15 years before moving out of studio in 2003 to concentrate on adventure journalism and professional speaking. She has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro twice, attempted Mount Aconcagua (the highest peak in the southern hemisphere), walked 500 kilometres from the lowest the highest points of Zimbabwe and canoed sections of some of Africa's big rivers. In 2003 she spent three months on an expedition to Mount Everest, reporting on the Discovery team's attempt to stand on top of the world. Her irreverent diary about life at Base Camp was later published as a popular book called "Off Peak."

SOME COMMENTS ABOUT 'FOOTING WITH SIR RICHARD'S GHOST'

'Patricia Glyn's book tells the story of a challenging trek through contemporary Africa, following the footsteps of her illustrious Victorian ancestor, Sir Richard Glyn. We see through her modern eyes the impact of the technological assault on our old continent and she leaves us elated at one moment and depressed the next. I was gripped from the first page and I believe this book to be a valuable addition to Africana literature.'
    Ian Player, wilderness conservationist

'Think swashbuckling explorer and the image that comes to mind is usually pale and male. In this book Patricia Glyn breaks the mould and traipses through one more glass ceiling in her inimitable style: straight, sassy and vulnerable in parts. This woman's journey is a delightful read.'
Ferial Haffajee, Editor, Mail and Guardian

'Brysonesque, fascinatingly informative, dogged, quixotic, brave. This is a remarkable book about a remarkable journey by a remarkable person. I don't know which I admire more - the pilgrimage itself, or the way it is written up.'
    Tim Couzens, award-winning author

'This is a very powerful woman - so powerful that she could become a sangoma.'
    Makhosi Mthembu, sangoma

'We 21st-century humans are so far removed from the real 'what is'. Out there in the wilderness, Patricia lived it, touched on it and was touched by it. While we carried on with our silly lives, she struggled with God and the elements and herself. When we stop and think about what she completed, we are utterly moved by the majesty of her reality and the hope new vision brings.'
Sir Richard Lindsay Glyn, 10th baronet of Ewell and 7th of Gaunts, great grandson of Sir Richard George Glyn

  • MAFEKING'S ARTILLERY
Colin Walker is a retired Headteacher and a life-long Scout. A one-time Chairman of Central Yorkshire Scout Council, he now writes extensively on Scout History and The Siege of Mafeking.

On his retirement Colin began to research Scout History resulting in the well-known Scouting Milestones Scout History Web Pages. His early researches into the Mafeking Cadets led to the compilation of the Mafeking Siege Register, a unique database recording the activities of the besieged. Primary resources, such as the published and most of the unpublished Siege Diaries, Baden-Powell's Staff Diary, the complete run of Mafeking Mail Siege Slips, the medal rolls and medal auction catalogues and evidence seen at first hand in the world's leading collections of Mafeking Postal History, have all be included.

A visit to Mafeking to collate information in the town's Museum resulted in further data and names being added to the register which now contains the Mafeking history of over 1800 people. From this knowledge base, pages have been added to the website and magazine articles written, resulting in email contact with families who had a relative amongst the besieged. Amazingly, 106 years after the event, two contacts were from individuals whose fathers had fought in Mafeking.

This quite astounding research has allowed the author to provide factual details of the weapons used in the Siege, 'The Wolf' made in Mafeking's Railway workshops, 'The Lord Nelson', an old naval cannon found on a Mafeking farm being used as a gate post, the four British obsolete seven pounders and the famous Boer Long Tom. There is also detailed research on the Hotchkiss, Nordenfeld and Maxim guns with many illustrations including photographs taken during the siege and of the weapons today, taken by the author in their various locations, across the world. It is however the personal stories of the men who fired the guns that bring this unique work to life. There are 70 pages in A4 format. The book is professionally published with ISBN.

The garrison, in one of the most remote locations in the British Empire, was outnumbered and outgunned. This publication ably demonstrates just why it was that Baden-Powell was able to lead 'Gallant Little Mafeking' successfully through the longest Siege of the Boer War.

  • A SOLDIER ARTIST IN ZULULAND
William Whitelocke LLoyd and the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879

    by David Rattray

Featuring previously unpublished watercolour paintings and sketches of the Anglo-Zulu War. As an officer of the 24th Regiment of Foot, Lieutenant William Whitelocke Lloyd (1856-1897) saw active service in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. He was also an artist of considerable talent. On his return to civilian life he became the official artist for the P&O and Union Castle Lines, and several books were published of his artwork. But the watercolour paintings and sketches he made during the Anglo-Zulu War have remained unpublished and unknown for more than a century.
From the sea voyage to Cape Town and throughout the Zulu campaign, to the time he departed, the paintings give a graphic rendition, as accurate and informative as it is beautiful, of key events in the campaign, including the aftermath of the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, the death of the Prince Imperial and the final battle of Ulundi.
In the accompanying text details are given of the progress of the 24th Regiment in parallel with the wider story of the campaign. The use of original diaries and source material infuses the stories of individuals with life, and the paintings themselves shed new light on many of the events of the war. This will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in the Anglo-Zulu War.
