  • Explosive Manufacturing in South Africa
Source: "The Dynamite Company, the story of African Explosives and Chemical Industries Ltd" by A P Cartwright (Purnell 1964) [Main plants were at Modderfontein, Somerset West and Umbogintwini. The initial production was concerned with explosives but developed over the years to include paint, plastics, fertiliser and other chemicals for industry.]

  • THE SETTLER HANDBOOK by MD NASH (Chameleon Press, Cape Town 1987)
The over 4,000 British people, who came to South Africa as the 1820 Settlers had a powerful impact on the development of the country. Today, their numerous descendants are scattered throughout the sub-continent, and the world, even though most of the Settlers were initially located on grants of land in and around Albany, in the Eastern Cape.

Mrs Nash has compiled a revised list of the original settlers of 1820, working mostly from documents in the Cape Archives and the Public Record Office, London. The result is a valuable aid to researchers and settler descendants wanting to explore their ancestral origins.

The author, herself a settler descendant, was born in Grahamstown, the 'settler city'. She has an MA degree in history from Rhodes University, and was head of the cultural history divisions of the Port Elizabeth and Albany museums. Her publications include BAILIE'S PARTY OF 1820 SETTLERS (Balkema, Cape Town 1982), and she is acknowledged as an authority on the 1820 settlers.

  • POST 1820 SETTLERS

  • 1820 'Duke of Marlborough' Passenger List
This was a private migration and not part of the government assisted 1820 Settler group.

The 'Duke of Marlborough' sailed from Portsmouth on 30 Mar 1820 and arrived at Table Bay on 18 Jun 1820 being the last of the settler ships to arrive. The ship carried 40 passengers of whom 'about 35' were part of the Daniell party. This was not a government assisted party and was therefore not part of the overall scheme.

  • 'Umvoti County, Jewel of Natal', ISBN 0-620-10707-3, published in 1985 by the Greytown & District Council for the Care of the Aged, PO Box 212, Greytown, South Africa , 3500.

The Settlers in this area were mainly from Germany and Britain.
Umvoti County includes the areas surrounding Greytown, Muden, Seven Oaks, Hermannsburg, Kranskop, Dalton, New Hanover and Wartburg. The book has no index, names of interest to genealogists are only included and place names are omitted. Pastor, Father, Bishop, Archdeacon, Superintendent, etc. have been changed to Reverend for the sake of simplicity. Some of the names are probably duplicated because it cannot be assumed that, for example, J Bloggs was Joe Bloggs.
