ARRIVAL OF THE EDWARD Natal Witness May 10 1850
The 680 ton barque Edward left Gravesend 9 January 1850 and landed at Natal on 24 March having carried her 250 passengers safely during a comparatively uneventful voyage.
Most of the emigrants were destined for Richmond, and their names read like a familiar roll-call. There were the three brothers DACOMB. John FEILDEN (given in the Witness as FIELDING), acquired the property 'Fenniscowles', and his wife compiled a charming diary published as 'My African Home', illustrating what life was like for a woman in the Colony. Another was Anthony PIGG (spelled with one 'g' in the Witness) members of whose family later mined gold at Pigg's Peak. An omission in the published Witness list is John FRANKLIN, who was so keen to come to Natal that he agreed to work his passage as cook; preparing three meals a day for over 200 people on board ship may have dimmed his enthusiasm - especially as he received no land allotment at the end of it. WILKINSON and BARTLETT were specifically sent by Byrne to establish a fishing business using the large surf-boat which was carried as cargo on this voyage, but the project was unsuccessful. About 20 Wesleyans, including the POVALL family, travelled per Edward.
