ARRIVAL OF THE HENRIETTA Natal Witness July 12 1850
"Winds East, E.N.E. Friday July 5th (sic) p.m. (nautical time) Fine clear weather, with increasing breeze. Ship under all drawing sail, running along the land towards Natal.
At 3.30 saw one ship and one brig at anchor in the roadstead. At 4.30 came to an anchor in eleven fathoms of water and eighty fathoms of cable; furled the sails, and set the anchor watch. At midnight, the Minerva broke adrift from her anchors, and went ashore near the Bluff."
The Henrietta's second mate courageously attempted to go to the aid of those on the Minerva and in so doing was drowned, the only person to lose his life in this shipwreck.
Captain OATES (not OAKES as given in the Natal Witness) commanded the Henrietta (not entirely to everyone's satisfaction), and the voyage from Liverpool lasted 100 days. Among the 173 passengers were Joseph and Fanny LANDERS and their five children, Robert MACK, George MASON (who wrote 'Life with the Zulus of Natal'), John HATHORN and family, and the TARBOTONs.
