ARRIVAL OF THE LADY BRUCE Natal Witness May 17 1850
The engraving on this page depicts the 538 ton three-master Lady Bruce at anchor in Portsmouth, where she made a stop after sailing from London docks on 16 February 1850 and picked up emigrants from the Beaulieu estate in Hampshire before heading for Natal on 25 February. (Her tonnage is given incorrectly as 800 in the Witness and her captain's name was BURNS not BURN.)
There were 19 Wesleyans on board, as well as the Duke of Buccleuch's tenants (who came armed with tents and seeds) and other Byrne settlers. Well-known names on the list include CROUCH, GODDEN and FOSS. BARAGWANATH evidently proved a challenge for the Witness, as the name is given as BARRAYWANAGH.
Moreland commented in correspondence that "the Captain and Doctor have acted injudiciously" on this vessel and that "one of the female passengers had been taken into the Cabin and slept in the state cabin of the Captain."
