ARRIVAL OF THE HENRY TANNER Natal Witness October 10 1849

This ill-found barque of 388 tons, under Captain DAVIES, arrived safely at Natal on 9 October 1849, despite having leaked badly throughout the voyage and being undermanned. Some deaths had occurred, including those of two people who had eaten tainted pork. On arrival, a legal argument as to whose responsibility - the Captain's or Byrne's agent's - it was to transport the passengers from the ship in the roadstead to the landing-place, resulted in the settlers being unable to take possession of their baggage for a month.

Among those on board were the HENWOOD family, Edward BUERDSELL, Robert CLARKSON (who was a deaf mute), Robert RAW the chemist, and James WINTER, who became a member of the Natal Legislative Council. Jane MULLINS travelled with her infant, who died on the voyage; Jane must have had to face the future with extra fortitude.

An advert in the Natal Witness reveals an interesting selection of cargo goods incoming on the Henry Tanner: practical items such as soap, mustard, pickles, linseed oil, turpentine, paint, candles, as well as something for the inner man - porter and "superior brandy" - also cotton cloth "baftas" and "punjums". Note that the advertised establishment, owned by James ROSS, could also supply elephant guns. One-stop shopping in 1850.
