CO48/52 National Archives, Kew, London  ~   Selected Settler Correspondence for 1820

Transcribed by volunteers from the ZA-IB and ZA-EC Rootsweb mailing lists from digital photographs taken by Sue Mackay at the National Archives. The original correspondence is filed in order of receipt. Here it has been placed in alphabetical order according to the surname of the writer, with letters by the same writer in chronological order, for ease of reading. Original spelling has been maintained.

Letters were either addressed to Lord BATHURST, Secretary of State for the Colonies, (starting My Lord), or to his deputy Henry GOULBURN (starting Sir). Reference numbers, where given, refer to printed page numbers stamped on the letters and will enable visitors to the National Archives to locate the letter more easily. If a page number is not given then the date of the letter will give a good idea of its whereabouts in the file.

ALL the 1819 correspondence was transcribed (see CO48/41 through CO48/46) whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape, and the names of actual settlers appeared in red. Here only letters by known settlers or their families, or letters of great relevance to the 1820 settlers, have been transcribed, therefore no colour distinction has been used. In many cases further letters by the correspondents below are filed with the 1819 correspondence.

BOARDMAN, William

La Belle Alliance

Deptford

4th January 1820

Sir

Not having yet received any information with respect to the terms on which I am to go out with Mr WILLSON’s party as a clergyman, and the vessel being about to leave Deptford tomorrow, I take the liberty to request whatever information you may think proper to communicate with regard to my stipend, and the duties required from me.

It has been suggested to me that a portion of the stipend is usually advanced to clergymen going abroad under similar circumstances. Should that be the case it would be of essential service to me at present as I have incurred considerable expenses in bringing my family consisting of eleven persons, more than two hundred miles, as well as by living for some time in London: unless therefore an advance be made I feel that it will be impossible to acquit myself with that respectability, and effect, which are essential to the interests of my party and the support of my family.

Requesting most respectfully that you will be pleased to communicate without delay whether I may draw a portion of my stipend, as also that you will be pleased to state what that stipend may be.

I have the honour to be Sir,

Your very obedient and respectful servant

Wm. BOARDMAN

Mr. Miles BOWKER late resident of South Newton near Salisbury in the County of Wilts with his party Embarked on board the Weymouth Store Ship the latter end of December last (1819) for the new settlement at the Cape of Good Hope sanctioned by His Majesty’s Government. – John Mitford BOWKER of South Newton aforesaid aged 20 years and son of Miles BOWKER being one of the party is desirous to proceed to his Father at the Cape Settlement without delay and he most respectfully begs that Earl BATHURST His Majesty’s Secretary of State for the Colonial Department will give the necessary instructions for him to proceed forthwith to the said Colony.

[Note from clerk on reverse]

Lord PEMBROKE called here to enquire whether Mr. BOWKER would be provided with a passage to the Cape. The Sir George Osborn was at Deptford on Saturday and the Navy Office say that if the passage is ordered immediately BOWKER can go on board.

Footnote from GOULBURN

Mr GOULBURN’s complts and there is no longer any prospect of forwarding BOWKER.

On board the Fanny

Feby 4th 1820

Sir,

I enclose you the embarkation return of my party. I kept as near to the original return as possible, to keep quite to it was impossible as I had no control over the head of the families and a man might promise this week and decline the next. We expect to sail any tide.

I have the honor to be

Most obed’ly yours

Thos. BUTLER
