To the Hon Colonel SMITH, Commanding the Province of Queen Adelaide.

Graham’s Town, 15th Feb 1836

Sir,

We the undersigned , having observed with regret in the Graham’s Town Journal the copy of an order said to have been issued by you in the New Province, in which you state it had come to your knowledge that some of the present traders were carrying on a most unfair, unjust and fraudulent traffic with His Majesty’s new subjects (the Caffers); and you further remark, that if such was their conduct, it required no philosopher to tell why the Caffers were so virulent towards the traders in the late war. As we know, and are well able to prove, that we dealt neither unfairly, unjustly or fraudulently with any of the Caffer tribes before the war, but from the great competition &c there then was, actually gave them prices for their produce far too high to leave us anything like a fair profit for our great risk and trouble; and as mischievous and wicked persons will, and already have, endeavoured to turn your words to their account, and to our disadvantage, we wish particularly to hear from yourself whether you have any grounds for believing or supposing that our conduct, or the conduct of the traders generally, before the war, in their intercourse with the Caffer tribes was unbecoming them as men and as Englishmen.

We beg the favor of as early a reply as you can find it convenient.

We have the honor to be Sir your most obedient servants,

W. FOWLER

Dep.Qtr.Master Gen’s Office, King William’s Town, 27th Feb 1836

Gentlemen,

In acknowledging receipt of your letter of the 15th inst, which I received yesterday, I am scarcely competent to express any very decided opinion, from a want of knowledge of frontier affairs before the war. It is with great pleasure and satisfaction, however, that I avow none of our new subjects complained of the traders before the late irruption; and of some they speak in terms of regard, asking when they will return. The labour attendant on trade here formerly must have been excessive; and such arduous undertakings merit a fair profit. Competition can alone establish it upon a just and equitable basis, and nothing can be more prejudicial to its real interest than combination.

The expression in the orders I issued is an assumption, “if such was their conduct”. You, gentlemen, must be the best judges of your own actions, and if conscientiously you feel that your conduct as traders was fair and manly before the war (certainly nothing to the contrary has been brought under my observation) this personal gratification and self-satisfaction must be superior to anything I can advance in proof of it. Be assured facts will establish the supremacy over prejudices and prepossession, as well as over those predilections of the human mind which have the greatest influence in perverting its judgement.

I have the honor to be &c

SUICIDE AT GEORGE TOWN

14th May 1836

A person of decent address and attire, stating his name to be B. BURBEROW, arrived here on the 6th instant in company with a man named SWEENY, from Cape Town, on their way to Graham’s Town, and put up at Mr. BROWN’s public house, where they remained till the Monday following; while in conversation with his fellow traveller after dinner he suddenly accused him of stealing his money, and immediately took up a knife and attempted to stab him. SWEENY then went out of the house and was followed by BURBEROW when SWEENY, for protection, struck him with a stick, when he desisted from his intention. BURBEROW was immediately taken into custody; when on the following day, being brought before the Resident Magistrate, he stated himself to be NORTON, brother to Mr. John NORTON of Messrs. NORTON & Co, Graham’s Town. The Magistrate having heard the case, dismissed it, considering it a drunken spree. He, however, cautioned the Canteen-man BROWN against having such a disturbance on his premises, and told him he would not grant him his certificate if it again occurred. BROWN said the man was not drunk, but he did not think him right in his mind, and was sure he did not know what he was saying. They then left the Office. But BROWN being afraid to take him in after what occurred, the stranger went away to the doctor, as he said he wanted medicine as he was not well. From the doctor’s he went opposite to Mr. DAWSON’s, with a note from the doctor to Mr. DAWSON, advising him to give spiritual aid to the bearer of the note, as he appeared to the doctor to be in a depressed state of mind. Mr. DAWSON not wishing to receive the stranger on his premises on account of a suicide having been recently effected by the late James ORMISTON, accompanied the stranger to Mr. R.O. SCOTT, who seeing him a well dressed and decent looking man, took him in for the night. He ate his supper well, but Mr. SCOTT suspecting by his language, and having been informed by Mr. DAWSON that he was not in his right mind, determined to watch him the whole night, and having taken all his knives and razors, one of which he had out of the case in one of his pockets, from him, and even his neck cloth, let him retire to rest, leaving two boys to sleep at the door of his room to watch him. Towards morning Mr. SCOTT heard a noise, and on going into the room found the rod of the curtain had fallen down, upon which he assisted Mr. SCOTT in putting it up again. Mr. SCOTT asked him if he would have some coffee, and being answered in the affirmative, he went and called the girl to bring some. The girl took the coffee into the room and saw the stranger kneeling on the bed. She ran and told Mr. SCOTT, who immediately came into the room and found he had strangled himself with a yellow silk handkerchief fastened to the rod of the bed, not two feet from the bottom of the bed, with a running knot in the handkerchief. He was immediately cut down, but had breathed his last. The deceased was a man of short, stout and robust stature, and stated that he left Algoa Bay in the “Courier”, Palmer, in September last, for England, where he remained five weeks and returned again to the Colony.

DREADFUL MASSACRE OF FARMERS BEYOND THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY

(From the Graham’s Town Journal, Sept 29)

It is with the most poignant sorrow we state that rumours, which have been for some time afloat, relative to the massacre of a number of persons beyond the northern frontier, have been confirmed by communications received from the Rev Mr. ARCHBELL, dated Thaba Unchu, Sept 4. From these we gather the following particulars: That several farmers who were out hunting in the neighbourhood of the Vaal River, and who had joined a party who were migrating from the colony, were unexpectedly attacked by a large body of armed natives supposed to be the warriors of Masselikotse. The farmers defended themselves, it is said, with spirit, but were overpowered by numbers, and all massacred. The persons killed are said to be two farmers named KRUGER and DU TOIT, together with their five servants; Barend LIEBENBERG, the elder, his two sons, and his son-in-law; as also a person employed as schoolmaster; together with three of their wives and several children, some of whom  were infants at the breast of their mothers. The savages carried off 5 wagons, 80 oxen, about 4,000 head of cattle and a large number of sheep.

It is also said that the farmers now in that country are retreating towards the colony, but delaying a little in expectation of the return of a party who had gone further into the interior. Of the return of this party, however, little hope can be entertained, as they have not been heard of for a long time; and it is feared that they have shared the fate of their murdered companions.

Since the receipt of this information we have seen a farmer who had just arrived from the northern boundary, and who states that from reports current in that neighbourhood when he left, the number of persons killed was much less than that stated by Mr. ARCHBELL; but as we could not track his information to any satisfactory source we are sorry to state that there is every reason to fear that the detail we have given is too well founded.

[Since the above was put in type we have received the following, which we lose no time in publishing, in hopes it may have the effect contemplated by the writer]

To the Editor: Sir, I have forwarded you the annexed document (the original of which has been, per this post, forwarded to Col. SOMERSET by the Field-Cornet ERASMUS) in hopes that you may make such use of it as to deter a number of our oppressed but deluded farmers from running into danger, which will be the unavoidable consequence of their leaving the colony. The object of these savages was not to attack ERASMUS, but the trek farmers; but he unfortunately lay in their path. Jealousy of the encroachment of the farmers, and no doubt a wish also to possess themselves of their fine flocks, was the cause of this attack; and ERASMUS is of opinion, from all that he could gather from the savages themselves, that this is only the prelude to a tragedy, which will ultimately leave the farmers on the other side of the Orange River in a worse state, if possible, than the Kafirs left our Albany farmers. In hopes I have not encroached on your valuable time, I am &c

A.G.

DIED at Bathurst on Thursday the 24th ult, the wife of the Rev. W. DAVIES, Pastor of the Baptist Church in this town. It will probably be in the recollection of many of our readers that Mr. DAVIES and family, when on their voyage to this country in Jan 1832, were shipwrecked on the Island of Palma. They had hazy weather, and were sailing at night perfectly unconscious of danger when the crew suddenly found themselves surrounded by breakers, and in spite of every effort the ship struck on a reef of rocks, and canted over on her beam ends. The sufferings of that fearful night are beyond description. The only child of Mr. and Mrs. DAVIES was torn from their arms by the resistless surges, and buried in the ocean, and it was only by the merciful interposition of providence that their own lives were preserved, till daylight enabled them to take measures for their escape to land. This, however, was happily effected; shortly after which Mrs. DAVIES was confined with twins, one of whom only survived a very brief space. But the constitution of the mother had sustained a shock from which it never recovered. Though possessing great fortitude and decision of character, which enabled her, in firm reliance on Divine Providence, to recommence the voyage, still her physical powers were greatly impaired, and after struggling with great bodily infirmity and suffering, she at length closed a life of considerable usefulness, at the early age of 38 years, in perfect acquiescence of the Divine will, with a firm reliance on the atonement of her Redeemer and “a sure and certain hope of a glorious resurrection”.

PORT ELIZABETH

Our attention has been drawn to the almost incredible fact that Port Elizabeth – the Port of the Eastern Division of the Colony – a bustling, thriving, immoral sea-port – a place of considerable wealth, with a population of 2,000 souls – there is no Resident Magistrate. The Magistrate of Uitenhage, it seems, who resides 18 miles from this Port, will hereafter visit, or at present visits it, once or twice a week, to settle disputes and to punish offences. But surely at such a Station, where the Masters of ships may every day require his assistance, and to whom a delay of two or three days must often be equal to a very heavy fine, to say nothing of the risks to which ‘ship and cargo’ must be exposed at certain seasons, the prompt administration of Justice, by a Magistrate always on the spot, is of more importance than at Uitenhage itself. It is on such subjects that the Colonists should draw up and sign petitions.
