Death of Mr. William Cole CURRIE.
On Sunday evening the sad tidings of the death of Mr. Wm. CURRIE reached us from Somerset, where he expired on the previous Thursday, the 20th inst. Most of our readers are aware that Mr. CURRIE was a Lieutenant in the Somerset Border Police and was severely wounded by a charge of loopers in the thigh, in an affair at the Slagtkamer in the Zuurberg, with the murderous gang of rebel Hottentots under the notorious Hans Brander. Another brave man, Mr. J. BOUWER, who was wounded on the same occasion, died about New Year. Our Frontier has thus been deprived of two as brave and valuable men as any country perhaps could produce.
Wednesday 16 February 1853

TOWN STATISTICS
In another column will be found some statistics of the town of Graaff-Reinet, from which it will be seen that the town with its gardens covers an area of about 430 acres, and consists of 574 houses with 3,617 inhabitants. Last season 3,337 aums of wine and 891 half aums of brandy were made from the fruit grown in the town; much of this wine remains yet on hand, but brandy is very scarce. It is not expected that much wine will be made this year, although the vintage is uncommonly fine; but most likely a considerable quantity of brandy will be produced. The total value of the produce raised in the town amounts to the sum of £8,307 19s.
The influenza prevails to a very considerable extent in the town of Graaff-Reinet and its neighbourhood. The weather has lately been exceedingly hot, 110 degrees in the shade, and on Sunday last the wind blowing over the flats was like a blast from a furnace. Fortunately for us a steady soaking rain set in on Monday evening, which has so cooled the air that one can now indulge in the luxury of a good cold shiver.

HOLLOWAY'S OINTMENT
A Cripple Sets Aside his Crutches after Ten Years Suffering
Copy of a letter from Mr. THOMPSON, Chemist, Liverpool, dated August 20th 1852
To Professor Holloway:
Dear Sir, I am enabled to furnish you with a most extraordinary cure effected by your invaluable ointment and pills, which has astonished every person acquainted with the sufferer. About ten years ago Mr. W. CUMMINS of Saltney Street in this town was thrown from his horse, whereby he received very serious injuries; he had the best medical advice at the time and was afterwards an inmate of various infirmaries, yet he grew worse, and at length a malignant running ulcer settled in his hip, which so completely crippled him that he could not move without crutches for nearly ten years. Recently he began to use your ointment and pills, which have now healed the wound, strengthened his limb, and enabled him to dispense with his crutches, so that he can walk with the greatest ease, and with renewed health and vigour.

THE GRAAFF-REINET HERALD
The First Number of the Herald's Second Year
This week we have the gratification of presenting, in the first number of our second year, an enlarged paper, and although we do not ambitiously emulate the gigantic proportions of the Graham's Town Journal, nor the versatile powers of the double-tongued Commercial Advertiser (we refer, of course, to its being printed in two languages), yet we venture to hope that our columns will be adequate to the requirements of the community we serve. Our present size is an increase of one fourth, and we trust that the interest of the paper will also be proportionate.
We cannot close this necessarily curtailed article without gratefully acknowledging the support we have received, and we rely confidently upon its continuance as long as we do our best to deserve it.

Sir, Allow us to offer our sincere congratulation on your return to the Colony, fully re-instated as you are in the arduous and responsible office of Acting Secretary to the Government.
Our previous knowledge of your character had prepared us for the result of your appeal to Her Majesty's Government, as we never believed that your official conduct could have deserved or justified so extreme a measure as your suspension from office.
That you may long be spared to fulfil with benefit to the community and honour to yourself the arduous duties of your office is our sincere wish.

GRAAFF-REINET SOVEREIGNTY PETITION
The Petition of the Inhabitants of the Town and District of Graaff-Reinet in the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope
Most humbly sheweth,
That your petitioners have heard with surprise and alarm the startling intelligence of the Abandonment of the Sovereignty of Your Majesty's Government over the Orange River Territory.
That viewing, as they do, such a measure as utterly subversive of the best interests of the Inhabitants, Aboriginal as well as European, they cannot resist the conviction that a step so unprecedented, and fraught with consequences so fatal alike to the Territory as the Colony, could only have been decided on by Your Majesty's Government in the absence of full information in regard to the salutary and satisfactory results that have followed from the extension of British supremacy over that country, and perhaps from a mistaken view of the now general feeling within the Territory in regard to British rule.
That under this impression your petitioners most humbly beg to call the attention of Your Majesty's Government to the following considerations. Within the short period of five years (the period during which the Territory has been under British supremacy) the blessings of Christianity have been diffused, the arts and appliances of civilized life have been introduced and a peaceful, loyal and productive community established in a region which used to be regarded as a barren wilderness, where there prevailed only scenes of anarchy, confusion and bloodshed, and to which lamentable condition your petitioners are fully convinced it would soon again revert were British sovereignty summarily withdrawn.
Your petitioners are further convinced that Your Majesty's Government, when it decided on the withdrawal of its supremacy, were not aware that such a measure was in opposition to the almost unanimous wish of the inhabitants; that under the paternal care of the British Government the young country had progressed so rapidly, or that the interests now involved in the abandonment of the Sovereignty were of such magnitude and importance as facts will sufficiently establish.
That your petitioners would wish to impress most earnestly upon your Majesty's Government the serious danger to the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope which would inevitably result from the Relinquishment of British Sovereignty over the Orange River Territory. Such a step would at once rouse to new vigour the now half stifled conviction among the Native Tribes, not only on our North Eastern but on our Eastern Frontier. That Your Majesty's Government is unable to maintain the authority it has assumed and exercised in this country. They would nor themselves take any such step, save from fear or weakness, and they are not capable of understanding or appreciating any other motive under which Your Majesty's Government can do so. These tribes are unsettled, and most discontented with their present position. They have among them a very considerable number of deserters from your Majesty's service, and many besides who cherish the most frenzied notions of avenging imaginary injuries inflicted under Your Majesty's Government. Your petitioners therefore view with the most serious alarm and painful apprehension any step that is calculated to embolden the worst passions and feelings of these classes; and the withdrawal of British authority from any portion of our Frontier already occupied will most undoubtedly have that effect.
Your petitioners therefore, conceiving that they have adduced sufficient reasons for Your majesty's Government to reconsider the question of abandonment in all its bearings and consequences, humbly but earnestly pray that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased to cause to be rescinded any resolution that may have been formed for the abandonment of that Sovereignty, and that your supremacy be maintained where its influence has been so much in favour of humanity, justice and religion, and under which a spirit of loyalty to your Crown, and attachment to your person, has so greatly increased.
And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray

Departed this life on the 19th Nov, aged 12 years, the only son of our esteemed friend William SOUTHEY Esq. This forms one of those dispensations in which there is no consolation, unless it can be drawn from an enlightened view of Christianity. The bereaved parent had not seen his child for five years, and was on his way to visit him, but the meeting was not to be in this world. The lad, we understand, had displayed evidence of a mind of no ordinary mould, and like so may others of this class he has been 'taken away from the evil to come'.

From earth, where sins and grief abound;
It drops its fragile form of clay
To rise where brighter scenes surround.'

Married in St.James's Church Graaff Reinet on the 9th January 1854, William CHARLTON Esq, Keeper of Her Majesty's Prison, to Miss Louisa SMITH, native of St.Helena, the well-known little island where Napoleon breathed his last; she is the step daughter of ... Died on Sunday at 4 o'clock in the afternoon of the 22nd inst, William Christian, aged 6 months and 17 days, son of J.S.P. BOTHA of Graaff Reinet
BRUTAL ASSAULT
On Saturday last Isaac VAN ASWEGEN, Frederic POTGIETER, David BENADEE, Fietje OCTOBER, Roselyn JULY were brought before the Resident Magistrate charged with ill-using a Hottentot named Piet JACOBS at Zuur Fontein, op Sneeuwberg, who has since died. The case as stated by the deceased a few hours previous to his death is as follows:
On the 4th inst, having returned home where my wife and daughter were, a quarrel ensued between me and my daughter, when she ran out of the house and returned with Izaak VAN ASWEGEN and David BENADIE, who immediately knocked me down and kicked me, and beat me with their fists, and BENADIE trod on me. Izaak VAN ASWEGEN put a reim around my neck and almost choked me by twisting it tight. They dragged me along to a vice and screwed my leg tight in it; they were helped to do this by my wife and daughter. Frederic POTGIETER joined them and asked what was the matter, and Izaac VAN ASWEGEN said I was a vagabond, and ordered him to hold me while he flogged me, saying that he was rich and could pay. POTGIETER held me by one arm and my wife and daughter by the other; Isaac VAN ASWEGEN went and got a candle and a halsband and severely beat me. They all kicked and beat me for about an hour; I was faint and nearly dead when they let me go. The next day I went to Jan COETJEE's place, the day after to Patrys Fontein and thence to Goliad's Kraal, and I got to Graaff Reinet on Sunday. I went to the Office on Monday, and one of the constables told me that they had so much to do that day that I must go away and come on Wednesday. I did so, and saw Mr. WATSON, who told me that Mr. BERRANGE being out of town nothing could be done. I then went to Bloemhof and laid my complaint before Mr. G. SOUTHEY JP. I declare that all the marks and bruises on my body, except a cut on my wrist, were caused by the beating at that time, given me by the persons named.
The man died on Friday morning the 20th instant. Mr. DYASON remanded the prisoners till next Friday.

CRICKET MATCH
Graaff Reinet is getting quite lively. What with the Dissolving Views, the Races and our Cricket Clubs we are going ahead surprisingly. To be sure there is very little business doing just now, and this melancholy fact doubtless in some degree accounts for our gaiety. However, be that matter as it may, we have the satisfaction of announcing that on Monday week, the 31st July, a grand match will be played between our two Cricket Clubs. The challenge was given by the Tradesmen and cordially accepted by the Gentlemen, with this alteration, that the match should be for bats and balls, agreeably to English custom, instead of being for a sum of money. The number of spectators on this occasion is expected to be very considerable, as the match excites a good deal of interest, and both parties feel quite sure of coming off winners.

James BROWNE
Market Square, Colesberg
Having just returned from Port Elizabeth, after purchasing an extensive assortment of goods, which will on inspection be found unrivalled, either as regards quality of the article, newness of style or lowness of price - feels pleasure in informing his friends and the public that he has now opened his store, opposite the Market House, and rests assured that on being favoured with a visit the above statements will not be found, as they too generally are, mere fictions.
Having been for several years in the employ of Messrs. HEUGH and FLEMING and lately in that of Messrs. DRAPER and Co, JB considers to be a sufficient intimation of his capability of purchasing in such a manner as to suit the wants of his country friends, thus preventing an accumulation of unsaleable goods, the benefit of which must accrue to the purchaser, he having no 'percentage' to pay to cover the loss sustained on unprofitable stock.
In consequence of arrangements entered into with one of the first houses of the Colony, as to the purchase of wool, JB intends buying largely the coming season; and where desired is willing to make advances on the clip.
To country dealers JB is able to offer most decided advantages, his extensive stock offering an opportunity of supplying themselves with every description of goods suited for their purposes, and the liberality of his terms will be no small inducement to intending purchasers.

REMARKABLE INSTINCT
A few days ago the people in charge of Mr. J.C. NAUDE's farm, at Winterhoek, were surprised to see a mare, belonging to the farm, running about the homestead, neighing loudly and evincing great uneasiness. As the mare was known to have a young foal it occurred to the men that something might have befallen it, and they immediately left their work and proceeded to the place where the mare had been feeding the day before. As soon as the men left the homestead the mare followed; and its foal was discovered half eaten by a tiger. The trap was laid for the animal, baited with the remains of the foal, and the next evening the tiger was captured. The foal was the progeny of a fine blood horse and of considerable value.

EXTENSIVE ROBBERY
An extensive robbery has been detected within the last few days at the stores of Mr. M.H. BENJAMIN. The robbery was perpetrated by Daniel HOGAN, a confidential storeman, who had been in Mr. BENJAMIN's employ for five years. It was part of HOGAN's duty to open original packages on their arrival from Europe, or from any part of the Colony where they had been purchased. On opening a case, his practice was to abstract a portion of the contents, prior to their being compared with the invoice. The deficiency was soon detected, of course, but as no suspicion was attached to him, application was made to the consignors for goods short packed, which allowances were made in may instances, with the understanding that the amount should be refunded if the goods turned up. All the missing goods in question have been found in HOGAN's house. It was also the storeman's duty to pack goods in cases or bales for country customers. On the arrival of these goods at their destination it was found that many of the goods were not in the cases, although they figured plainly enough on the invoices; and Mr. BENJAMIN was called upon to credit the parties with the deficiencies. Still no suspicion appears to have been entertained of the confidential storeman. But at length some little matters - a missing bridle, and a few bottles of brandy, provoked investigation. HOGAN was taken prisoner; his house was searched and, through the energy and activity of the chief constable, Mr. WATSON, upwards of £200 worth of the stolen property has been recovered. Two other persons were though to be implicated in this affair, but after a rigid examination before the Magistrate they were discharged.

LUNG SICKNESS AND HORSE SICKNESS
The following extracts from a letter of the 29th ult, received from an old and much respected friend, residing in the upper part of the Albany District, present a very painful description of the fearful losses of horned cattle and horses sustained by the inhabitants, and especially by the farmers near the sea coast. Many of our Graaff Reinet people, who have hitherto been so much more fortunate with their stock, will doubtless sympathise with their unfortunate brethren, who, after beraing the losses resulting from two or three ruinous Kafir wars, are now subjected to a calamity perhaps equally heavy.
Extracts: 'The lung sickness is raging fearfully down in Lower AlbanyIt seems much more virulent near the sea - from the humid state of the atmosphere, I should think. Mr. ... lost in six weeks 247 head of cattle out of 275! Mr. ...'s were dying at the rate of 30 a week! He writes me, saying that only four places were free from it below Blue Krantz, and should the disease not take a turn for the better there would soon be nothing upon the farms except wild bucks, pheasants and partridges! The people have been fast trekking away to the new districts; and when the cattle are dead of those that yet remain, they cannot exist longer there. I hear that several young felloes have and are going to join the Police Force - their cattle being all dead!
'I myself have escaped it so far, by shooting sick and lame oxen, left behind on the roads by the carriers; but most of my neighbours have now got it. It is thickening around me, as dismal to look at as a thunder cloud. The result time alone will show. How it will affect the Frontier Districts is difficult to imagine. ... told me yesterday that 80 fraals of Fingoes had got it below Fort Peddie. At one kraal, a short distance above him, they lost 80 out of 90 head of cattle. It will make a perfect revolution amongst the blacks, for good or evil. Tens of thousands of their cattle are already dead, and they are dying by hundreds daily; and the disease is spreading far and wide.
'I believe the only chance for us is dry weather. The drier the locality, the less virulent the sickness, as far as I can see. Inoculation seems to be again resorted to, and in may instances with apparent success. The fatter the cattle are, the more they die by inoculation. The chance is in favour of lean working oxen, kept in the yoke.
'The horse sickness is, I hope, nearly at an end. Fearful losses have been sustained. Many of my neighbours have not a horse left to ride. I have been more lucky, having lost six out of 43. Few persons have saved in proportion. The Fingoes have lost nearly all they had, but they got them cheap during the last war. It will be the means of humbling them, more than a good licking, should another war take place.'

Wool Washing Establishment at 'The Erf'
The undersigned begs to give notice to wool purchasers at Richmond, Colesberg, Middelburg and Graaf Reinet that he has commenced washing wool on his farm 'The Erf' at 3-8ths of a penny per pound.
Wool will be taken away and delivered back at the stores of parties in Graaff Reinet gratis. And should anyone desire it, the wool can be loaded up direct for Port Elizabeth, thus saving a great expense to those who have to re-store their wool, and have to pay Coolie hire.
A constant stream of clear water runs through the dams in which the wool is washed, so that the wool is beautifully cleansed, and is cleaner than that washed at any other establishment.
The undersigned further begs to inform those who may entrust him with their wool that he has already washed upwards of two hundred bales, and given the highest satisfaction. Every care and precaution is taken that no wool escapes out of the dams.

DEPARTURE OF MR. DYASON
Our late Civil Commissioner, George DYASON Esq, with his family, left Graaff Reinet on Monday last, at about 3pm, intending to proceed to Uitenhage.
Notwithstanding the unfavourable state of the weather, and Mr. DYASON being confined by illness to an ox wagon, our present Civil Commissioner Mr. BERRANGE, with about twenty other gentlemen on horseback, escorted him out of town to beyond the second drift of the Sundays River, and there bid him and his family a hearty farewell, expressing a hope, however, of seeing Mr. DYASON once more in Graaff Reinet at some future time, should his life be spared to undertake such a journey.
The remarks of Mr. BERRANGE, who spoke on behalf of the inhabitants generally, and the earnest behaviour of all present, produced a great effect on Mr. DYASON, who for himself and family returned his most heartfelt thanks for all the kind attentions of his numerous friends, some of whom had shown themselves more than brothers towards him.

OUR LOCAL MEMBERS
Messrs. ZIERVOGEL and GRISBROOK, we understand, are to leave Graaff Reinet on the 15th February to commence their legislative duties in Cape Town. The former, it is said, aspired to the Speakership, in the event of Mr. BRAND accepting the vacant Puisne Judgeship, and had canvassed the members of the Lower House on his own behalf. The resolution of Mr. BRAND not to resign has, for the present at least, blighted Mr. ZIERVOGEL's prospects of obtaining the office of Speaker. Without wishing to disparage Mr. ZIERVOGEL's acknowledged talents and general usefulness as a member of the Lower House, we confess that we should be sorry to see him placed in the Speaker's chair; and this opinion we know is entertained by many of his constituents.

IMMIGRATION
To the Honorable Legislative Assembly for the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, in Parliament assembled:
The petition of the undersigned inhabitants of the District of Graaff Reinet humbly sheweth
That you petitioners have observed with great satisfaction that His Excellency the Governor of this Colony has directed the attention of your Hon. House to the subject of European Immigration for this Colony.
That your petitioners fully concur in the desirability of introducing a large number of tradesmen and mechanics, as also agricultural and house servants, as a great want of such classes is experienced in all parts of the Colony, and especially in this Division.
That your petitioners are of the opinion that it is hopeless to expect that any considerable number of immigrants of good character will come to this Colony unless the inducement of free passage be held out to them.
That, as your petitioners are aware that the ordinary sources of revenue are inadequate to afford the means of supplying the necessary funds for immigration, your petitioners would humbly suggest that your Hon. House should with as little delay as possible sanction the plan proposed by His Excellency the Governor for raising the amounts required, as your petitioners are of the opinion that no other plan holds out equal facilities.
That your petitioners, with all deference to your Honorable House, would advise that the funds raised should be entrusted to the Executive of this Colony as, from its connection with the Imperial Government, it would be best able to expend the funds of the Colony with proper economy and efficiency, by being enabled to avail itself of the services and experience of British Emigration Commissioners.
That your petitioners would therefore humbly and earnestly request your Honorable House to empower the Executive of the Colony to carry out the proposed plan of immigration without delay; and your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray etc

REQUISITION to the Municipal Commissioners of Graaff Reinet
Gentlemen, We the undersigned inhabitants of Graaff Reinet feel compelled again to draw your attention to a nuisance which daily becomes more objectionable, and which seriously affects the health and comfort of many residents in Parsonage Street and the neighbourhood, hoping that some immediate steps will be taken to investigate the complaint, and remove the cause of it. It is probably known to Commissioners that a Slaughter House etc has lately been opened in Parsonage Street by Mr. F. JOUBERT, which premises are close to the street, and unprovided with any proper means of removing the daily accumulations of blood and offal. In consequence these disgusting substances at all times give forth the most filthy and sickening stenches, causing great annoyance in the neighbourhood, and especially in the evening becoming unbearable. So much is this the case that it is impossible to remain upon the stoeps, and doors and windows must be kept closed, in the vain hope of excluding these poisonous exhalations from our dwellings.
In addition to the constant annoyance we feel from this extremely offensive nuisance, we beg to remind Commissioners that should any epidemic or contagious disease visit Graaf Reinet, those persons will suffer a greatly increased risk of infection whose misfortune it is to reside near such ill-regulated slaughter houses as the one referred to; and a most serious responsibility will rest upon the Municipal Commissioners, as the guardians of this town, should they neglect these timely warnings, or think them unworthy of the attention of a public body.
For these reasons we hope that the Commissioners will promptly carry out the propose measure of removing all slaughter houses from the town to some suitable locality in the suburbs; but we trust that in the meantime you will investigate the particular nuisance complained of, and use your authority to abate it.
We have the honour to be, Gentlemen, your most obedient humble servants,

SINGULAR DETECTION OF A ROBBERY
On Tuesday last a clue was obtained to a robbery which had been committed in Graaff Reinet about four years ago. The discovery was made in consequence of the loan of a book. But in order to understand the matter thoroughly we must go back some six or seven years. At that time the party robbed, Mr. BROWN, Government Surveyor, was called to the Frontier on business. Before leaving Graaff Reinet he caused his furniture to be placed in two rooms of his house, and the key was given to his agent, Mr. DE VILLIERS, who, according to instructions, let the other part of the house. After some time Mr. BROWN, not anticipating that he should again be able to reside in Graaff Reinet, returned and sold off his furniture, though not without missing, among other things, the following articles: a green silk dress, a pair of gold bracelets, a number of books, a pair of double-barrelled pistols, a double-barreled rifle and a stone bottle of fluid Indian ink. However, as he had nothing to guide him to the discovery of the thief, he made no public complaint about the robbery. A year or two after this sale he came to reside in Graaff Reinet, and on Tuesday evening last he recognized in the hands of his son a volume of the Waverley Novels, which he knew had been locked up in the rooms with his furniture. The thought immediately struck him that this book might be the means of finding the remainder of the missing property; and on enquiry he found that the volume had been lent to his son by one of the children of David SMITH, a mason, who had formerly been the tenant of Mr. BROWN's house. Mr. BROWN accordingly stated the circumstances to the Clerk of the Peace. The result was that the house of David SMITH was searched, and there the Chief Constable discovered a gold bracelet, a green silk dress, a pair of pistols, a stone bottle containing fluid Indian ink and a number of books, all of which Mr. BROWN identified as his property. A silver spoon, marked T.N.G.M. was also found there, which has been identified as the property of Mr. MULLER. SMITH was out of the way, in consequence of an information that has been laid against him for smuggling. On account of these suspicious circumstances his wife has been taken into custody, and after being examined before the Magistrate has been remanded until the 17th July, and a warrant has been issued for the apprehension of SMITH.

The meeting was very well attended considering the shortness of the notice, and was exceedingly animated throughout. All the speakers proclaimed the great want of labour in this part of the Colony. But as it appeared there might be some difficulty in obtaining the services of the German Legion the meeting deemed it advisable to inquire into the matter before proceeding further, and therefore passed resolutions to that effect.
RESOLUTIONS:
1st: That this meeting cordially approving of the contemplated location of the British German Legion in this Colony, begs respectfully to bring to His Excellency's notice the great necessity existing in this Town and District for a large increase to the number of European mechanics and workmen, and humbly desires to know whether it would interfere with His Excellency's contemplated arrangements to have a small portion of the Legion located here.
2nd: That the following Gentlemen be appointed as a committee to transmit the above resolution to His Excellency the Governor, viz;
The Rev. George BROWN

A SUCCESSFUL HUNT
In the early part of last week Mr. Robert BAIN of Quagga's Valley, one of Mr. Wm. SOUTHEY's farms, and Mr. George MURRAY of Naude's berg, with his youngest brother Walter, rode over the mountains to the extensive flats about Cephanjes Poort, Kol Hoek and Zaayfontein, to shoot wildebeest, springboks etc. They were very successful, and in three days killed eighty-eight springboks and two wildebeest, or gnus, which were nearly all in excellent condition, many of the springboks being as fat as such game can be. A strong wagon they had taken was so heavily laden with these ninety carcases that some difficulty was experienced in getting all this quantity of game to the homesteads of the owners. Nothing, however, was left behind or lost. The weather was cold; and I have known fresh meat in those parts keep good for nearly a month in winter without any salt. Mr. BAIN and Mr. MURRAY made plenty of biltong after the game was brought home. Mr. R. WILSON had joined in the chase the first day, but his horse coming down at a gallop smashed the stock of his rifle, and he was obliged to retire.
