Thursday January 5 1837

Died, on Tuesday 20th ult at Theopolis, the wife of The Rev.G.BARKER, resident Missionary at that Institution. On the preceding evening Mrs.B. retired to rest in perfect health but was seized shortly afterwards by alarming illness, which terminated in premature labour, and ... before medical assistance could be procured or Mr.B., who was in town, could reach his home ... in the death of both child and mother. It is a tribute most justly due to the deceased to say that she was eminently suited to the station in which Providence had placed her, and that her death is felt as a severe calamity, not only by her bereaved partner and her numerous children, of whom eight survive her, but also by all the inhabitants of the village, to whom by her active benevolence and affectionate sympathy she had greatly endeared herself.

Died on Thursday last 28th ult after a lingering illness, Harriett, wife of Mr.Richard ORSMOND, lately arrived from England, leaving a Husband and five children to deplore her loss.

Thursday January 12 1837

EXTRAORDINARY STORM
Cradock 3 January 1837
We had one of the most terrific hailstorms ever experienced last Friday, which lasted for nearly an hour, leaving the vineyards and fruit trees in a deplorable condition. You may imagine the size of the hailstones when I tell you that they were three to the pound. It fortunately happened that the noise of the approaching storm drove every person into his house, hut etc. otherwise many broken heads would have been the consequence of this severe and unexpected storm. The main street, which is very low and hollow in the centre, was entirely under water; for planks, beams, ducks, geese, fowls etc swimming down in admired disorder. The Temperance Society may rejoice in the damage done here by the hail, for the chief brandy and wine makers have given up the idea of even trying either, for this season at least. The houses are much shattered, and it will take more time than we shall be able to get for the next year to make our little village look once more respectable. A local correspondent.

Resident Magistrate for Albany

AFFAIRS OF THE FRONTIER
We had the melancholy task of witnessing a few days ago a party of British settlers of 1820, with their wives and little ones, on their journey from their late flourishing settlement in search of a more peaceful and secure abode. We understand that it is not their intention to quit the colony, but to remove into the western province, and we doubt not, wherever they go, but that neighbourhood will be benefited by the same active industry which has always been displayed by them since their first arrival in the colony 17 years ago. We are informed that many others are preparing to follow them, so sensible are they of the jeopardy in which they are placed by the absurd measures which have been lately adopted towards the Kafir tribes. It may be very well for people at a distance to speculate on this subject, but to men who find the same Kafirs who have recently spread death and ruin through the land, brought to their very doors, who see bands of these barbarians wandering armed through the country and hovering about their dwellings, and whose families are obliged, when they make the demand, to supply them with food and submit to their menaces, - it is the height of folly to talk of security, and to require them to wait patiently the result of the experiment. No man in his senses will live in such a state of anxiety; and hence it is certain that this part of the frontier will again shortly be abandoned.

Deaths
Feb 15 Adelaide Catherine DIXON aged 6 weeks
On 22 Feb Mr.W.BEDDY, Clerk to his Honour the Lieutenant Governor. Deceased, we believe, came to this colony with a party of settlers under Mr. INGRAM. At Cape Town he commenced a Classical School, but not meeting with that encouragement he expected he shortly relinquished it. He subsequently conducted a newspaper under the title The Colonist, which was of but ephemeral existence; for though A.B.of Trinity College, Dublin, he never was popular as a writer; hence latterly he divided his time between his official duties, as clerk in the Government offices, and as a sheep breeder, in which latter capacity he suffered very severely, in common with others, by the Kafir Irruption. Deceased was a bachelor, and at the time of his death had only attained the age of 38 years.

Died on Friday 3rd inst. Caroline, youngest daughter of Mr.R.GODLONTON, aged 8 years and six months.

Departed this life on Monday 3rd inst at Graaff-Reinet, after a short illness of five days, Mr.J.B.BIDDULPH, aged 40 years 5 months. To those who knew him well it is needless to speak of his virtues; and those who knew him not will be unable to appreciate his merits from a feeble attempt to describe them. A wife and five small children are left to deplore the loss of an affectionate husband and father, his aged parents that of a kind and dutiful son, and society of an active, intelligent and honourable member.

Married on Wednesday 26th inst by the Rev.John HEAVYSIDE, John Mitford BOUKER Esq of Fort Peddie to Mary Anne, eldest daughter of Mr.STANDEN, Graham's Town.
Died at his residence in Port Elizabeth on the 21st inst, John Anthony CHABAUD Esq, Attorney of the Supreme Court, at the early age of 38 years. Deceased was highly respected by a large circle of friends for his urbanity of manner and unbounded hospitality. To unflinching independency of mind he joined that discrimination which led him at times to present the most uncompromising front to that spurious philanthropy which, like the canker worm, has eaten to the very core of this settlement. In him Port Elizabeth has lost one of its ablest and most zealous supporters and the Frontier in general a staunch defender of its rights.

The undersigned has for sale a fashionable assortment of Ladies' Boas, Tippets, Cuffs, Fur Trimmings, Ladies' Cloth Cloaks, Boan Cloaks, twilled Prints, permanent Twills, plate Prints, black and colored Gros de Naples, Flannels, with many other articles adapted for the season.

The following Epitaph on our late fellow colonist, the lamented Lieut.T.C.WHITE, has recently been forwarded to England to be sculptured on a marble Tablet, for which a very beautiful and chaste design has been furnished by Mr.F. I'ONS of this place:
Sacred to the Memory of
THOMAS CHARLES WHITE
A Native of Nottinghamshire, England
(Formerly Lieutenant in HM 25th Regiment of Foot)
Major of the Albany Local Volunteers and Acting Deputy Quartermaster General to the Burgher Force; who, after many years of persevering and successful effort, asd an Agriculturalist, to promote the welfare of his fellow Settlers, and improve this the country of his adoption, to which he emigrated in the year 1820, was slain by Kafirs on 14th May 1835 on the banks of the Bashee River, whither he had marched with a detachment of the British Forces under the command of Col. Smith, CB, to punish the calamitous and unprovoked Irruption of the Kafir tribes into this colony in December 1834. He thus died as he had lived ... in the service of his country.

December 1837

Departed this life on Friday evening, 1st Dec. Mrs.Julia TURVEY, aged 60 years, deeply regretted by her numerous offspring. She was a tender Mother, a faithful Wife and sincere Friend. Her early prospects ill fitted her to combat with an adverse world; but it brought her nearer to her God and enabled her to triumph over Death and the Grave, imparting a happy consolation to her bereaved partner, to whom a union of 32 years only served to increase her affection, and who leaves this testimony of her worth.

Died at Graham's Town on the 27th ult after a painful and lingering illness of seven months, Catherine WATHALL, relict of the late William WATHALL, in her 52nd year. The loss of this truly charitable individual will be felt by many, as numbers still exist who were the objects of her bounty. Alike in prosperity and adversity she was never found to relax in her benevolent intentions, or to turn a deaf ear when the voice of misfortune and distress cried pitifully for relief. To the orphan and the friendless she has in several instances been more than an mother, as many will be ready to bear witness; but the pride of her heart was that her benevolence should only be known to the objects of her generosity; and though many among thosw who knew her may refuse a tear to her memory, yet they will not withhold that tribute to departed worth her extensive charities so unassumingly entitle her to. (sic) Peace to her manes! May she never be forgotten!

OBITUARY
We have this week to record, in the death of Mr.Alexander MACDONALD, the loss of the oldest inhabitant of Graham's Town. Deceased was no less widely known than esteemed throughout this province. He came to this colony with the 93rd Regt., in which he served as a non commissioned officer with distinguished merit. From this regiment he was transferred to the Cape Corps, in which he continued to serve with ability for several years. He afterwards held a situation of great trust and responsibility in the Government Stores, until its abolition about two years after the arrival of the British settlers. On the breaking out of the last Kaffir war he was selected to fill the office of adjutant of the Local Volunteers, from which he was removed to the Provisional Battalions in the New Province, where he received the highest marks of esteem and approbation from the gallant Col.SMITH, the Commandant of the province, and from every other officer engaged in that service. Since the abandonment of that Province he has lived as a private citizen at Graham's Town, where his loss will be deeply deplored by a numerous circle of friends, who from long intimacy can well appreciate his great and varied excellencies. He was in the 60th year of his age, and sunk from the effects of a cancerous tumour in the stomach. To the above loss we have to add the name of Mr.Thos.ROBINSON, who died, as is stated, from the effects of cold, produced by detention on the banks of the Fish River when in a swollen state. The deceased was one of the oldest English inhabitants of this District. For some years he has been successfully engaged in sheep farming near the Kromme Range, in which neighbourhood his death will be greatly deplored by a select and respectable circle of friends and acquaintances. Deceased was in his 61st year.

MISSING

He is supposed to be dead; but any person giving information concerning him, or, if living, where he may be found, will be rewarded, on application to Daniel MASTERS, at Messrs.MAYNARD, Graham's Town.

Died at Graham's Town of Apoplexy on Monday afternoon, the 11th October 1841, Elizabeth JENNINGS, wife of Henry Thomas JENNINGS and relict of the late Thomas Stephen ROWLES. Deceased was attending to her usual business up to 8 o'clock on the evening of the previous Saturday, shortly after which she was seized with the fatal malady which terminated her earthly existence - and her afflicted family were compelled to witness her last breath - without even the mournful satisfaction of hearing her dying words or receiving her parting blessing. She was in the 53rd year of her age. As a woman of business, perhaps, none ever excelled her; she was one of the most affectionate and exemplary mothers; a kind and dutiful wife; a sincere and pious Christian and a credit to her sex. To her bereaved family her loss is irreparable and is deservedly and universally deplored by a numerous circle of friends and the community at large.

Deceased was one of the settlers on 1820 and had passed through the various gradations of an emigrant's life with credit to himself and advantage to his adopted country. Though of retired habits and seldom moving out of the domestic circle, he was justly esteemed by those who knew him for his general intelligence and scrupulous integrity in all his dealings. The disease which terminated his mortal career was consumption, greatly aggravated by being driven from his farm, with the loss of all his property, by the Kafir irruption of 1835. For the last twelve months of his life his sufferings were great, but he bore them with the firmness of a man and the patience and resignation of a Christian. A widow and a family of seven children are left to deplore this most afflictive bereavement. To his personal friends his memory will be ever cherished as a bright example of steady attachment and for an exhibition of what the poet meant when he recorded that "An Honest Man is the Noblest Work of God".

As a consistent member of the Wesleyan Society ... in which for many years she sustained with great acceptance the office of Class Leader ... as a prudent and affectionate wife and tender parent, her memory will ever be affectionately cherished by her friends ... by the church to which she belonged ... by her children and by her bereaved and aged husband. Though long suffering severely under the infirmities of age yet her death was sudden. Died at lang Kloof on Thursday 12th instant, Mr. Jacobus J.RADEMEYER, JP for the District of George, aged 52 years, 1 month and 7 days, deeply and universally regretted.
OBITUARY
Mr. Jacobus P.RADEMEYER, whose death took place on the 12th instant, has left a large circle of friends deeply lamenting his loss. Deceased was an old and tried servant of the public for many years, having rendered his personal services to the colony from his earliest years. He served with the commando under Colonel GRAHAM in 1812, when the Kafirs were driven from the Zuurverdt. In 1819 he joined the command under Colonel WILLSHIRE, as Field-cornet of George District, when he was 17 months away from his home. Upon the breaking out of the Kafir irruption of 1835 he immediately volunteered his services, and leaving his home in the month of January he proceeded with the George burghers with all expedition to the Frontier, with whom he joined Colonel SOMERSET at Bushman's River, and took psrt with his burghers in a sharp skirmish with the Kafirs in the Bushman's River poort, where the Kafirs, who were in considerable force, made a stout resistance, upon which occasion Lieut.O'REILLY was severely wounded. The division of the burghers under his orders thence proceeded along the coast, crossing the Fish River at Kafir drift, and occupied the heights above Trompeter's drift. On the 9th March 1835, while co-operating with a force under Colonel SOMERSET, acting in the defiles and passes of the Fish River Bush near Trompeter's Drift, he with only 45 men of his force came suddenly upon a very considerable body of Kafirs, strongly posted along the sides of a deep ravine. A fierce encounter immediately took place. In a very short period this gallant little body found themselves opposed by an increasing force of Kafirs from all points, with guns as well as assegais.

We direct the careful attention of those interested in the subject of Immigration to the communication from Mr.E.R.BELL relating to the arrangements made by Mr.COCK at the mouth of the Kowie, for the immediate employment of some newly arrived settlers. We are persuaded that if this plan be judiciously carried out it will be productive of most important and beneficial consequences to the Colony. To land proprietors, whose farms are only partially cultivated, and there are hundreds so situated, it presents the prospect of certain revenue, and to the country at large the rapid development of its productive resources.
The following additions have been made to our population this year by immigrants or discharged soldiers:

Per 'Conch' (the wrecked passengers ex 'Prince Rupert')    28
Per 'John Craig'    27
Per 'George'    34
Per 'Orator'    32
Per 'Guardian'    53
Per 'Ann'    82
Discharged Soldiers   200

Besides a great number in small arrivals of twos and threes by other vessels, at all events certainly together not less than 500, a pretty fair promise from this first 'wave of the tide'.
