POLICE MEMORIALS

The following is a list of Memorials erected in honour of certain individuals in the Police Service. It was compiled from archival resources at the SAPS Museum in Pretoria and submitted by Gerda COETZEE. It is not known if all the memorials are still extant.

Belfast, Mpumalanga (Eastern Transvaal)

BERG-EN-DAL MEMORIAL IN BELFAST

First memorial erected in memory of the twelve Zarps who died in the Battle of Berg-en-dal on 27 Augustus 1900. Erected in 1935. Second memorial unveiled on 29 Augustus 1970.

Erected in memory of the civilians and members of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek Politie (Zarps) who were killed during the Boer War (1899 - 1901) in the Eastern Transvaal.

The members who were buried at the first memorial were re-interred at the new memorial.

CHARLESTOWN POLICE MEMORIAL:

A tribute to the police members who died in action on 6 May 1927. They were shot and killed by the murderer SWART during an attempt to arrest him.

ISANDHLWANA MEMORIAL

Opposite the Town Hall, Pietermaritzburg.

A tribute to the members of the Natal Mounted Police who fell at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879.

Out of a total force of 34 members of the corps who took part in this engagement, 25 were slain and of these, 23 were found lying around the body of Colonel DUNFORD who was in command.
